Harry Potter fans have long dreamt up their ideal castings for the Marauders in the book universe, and Andrew Garfield has often found himself at the center of those discussions.

In the Harry Potter films, the Marauders, namely James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter, are only depicted as adults, leaving their younger versions to fans’ imaginations. Now, the internet has taken over, crafting entire Marauders storylines using clips from other movies.

After years of edits, fan art, and wild TikTok theories, the actor has finally broken his silence on being imagined as Remus Lupin. In a GQ interview, Garfield laughed and admitted he was:

“Late to the game...”

He also confessed how he’d only just gotten done watching The Prisoner of Azkaban.

Reimagining the Wizarding World: Imagining and fan casting Andrew Garfield as Remus Lupin

The idea of Andrew Garfield playing a Marauder in the Harry Potter world isn’t new. For years, fans have pieced together clips from The Amazing Spider-Man and several other Garfield projects to show him as a younger Professor Remus. Those edits painted him as the perfect Marauder. But until now, Garfield himself hadn’t weighed in.

During his GQ reaction video, the actor was shown an old TikTok comment that simply read, “REMUS LUPIN???” Garfield laughed and admitted;

“I’m very late to the game.”

He then revealed that he had just finished watching Prisoner of Azkaban, Lupin’s debut in the universe.

Still, this isn’t the first time Garfield’s name has floated around the Potterhead fandom. When asked in an earlier BBC interview if he’d ever consider playing Lupin and the Peter Parker actor answered by saying;

“I will consider any role offered, how’s that?”

While this does not confirm anything, fans still picture him holding a cup of tea in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.

The Fancasting: Why Andrew Garfield’s Remus lives rent-free in the minds of the spell fan-casters

The upcoming Harry Potter series from HBO has sparked a global conversation about casting the characters we've come to know and love. With each season focusing on one book, many fans expect Remus Lupin to appear around the third installment.

Potterheads feel strongly about his expressive eyes and gentle delivery, which mirror Lupin’s tragedy as a man who is both brilliant and burdened at the same time.

Whether or not HBO ever considers him for the role of Remus, Garfield’s fan-cast has already become a cultural symbol in fan spaces, blending fantasy and wishful thinking into something entirely its own.

And that’s the beauty of it because at the end of the day, Harry Potter isn’t just about who gets cast, but about how fans keep its magic alive through the imagination of their own. Garfield’s reaction only reinforced what fans already knew: Even if he never steps into those wizarding robes, he’s part of the world in spirit.

Andrew Garfield might be too “late to the game,” but his place in the fan culture is already pretty iconic. His response didn’t close the door on Lupin, but it simply reminded everyone that the fandom’s creativity is its own kind of spell.

Whether on TikTok or in fan art, the vision of Garfield as the werewolf proves that even years after the books ended, Harry Potter still inspires people to dream up new stories.
