MGM+ recently released its four-part true-crime docu-series Let the Devil In on August 31, 2025. The series will drop weekly episodes on the platform at 9 PM ET. The chilling docu-series is hosted by writer and director Eli Roth, who is famously known for his horror films like Cabin Fever and Hostel.

MGM+'s latest series revisits the terrifying case of 1988 New Jersey, where a 14-year-old boy, Thomas, stabbed his mother, Betty Ann, with his Boy Scouts knife and later plunged the knife into himself. His 10-year-old brother and father, who were sleeping upstairs, luckily survived the ordeal. As Roth takes his audience behind the scenes of this chilling incident, he alludes to the'Satanic Panic', which was prevalent in the 1980s and was connected to many ritualistic killings like this.

Through interviews with police officers, community members, and New Jersey residents, Let the Devil In will re-examine the case. The series explores the theories, conspiracies, and paranormal motivations behind the murder-suicide.

The official synopsis of the docu-series reads as follows:

''In 1988, a devout Catholic mother is murdered in Jefferson, NJ. The brutality of the crime and the investigation that follows sets the stage for whispers of demonic possession. Decades later, the truth remains tangled in paranoia and fear.''

Let the Devil In recounts the horrific tale of January 1988 in New Jersey, where 14-year-old Thomas Sullivan Jr. murdered his mother in their home, following which he set fire to the house, killing himself in the process. Additionally, newspaper reports from the 1980s also confirmed that Thomas also sliced his wrists and cut himself ear to ear with a pocketknife, an action particularly related to Satanism and occult-cults.

The recent MGM+ docu-series will re-investigate Thomas' case in a new light, with interviews from police officers and residents who witnessed this terrifying incident firsthand. Additional reports suggest that Thomas had been deeply immersed in researching Satanism before the murder-suicide. Police discovered several books, journals, and a note indicating that he was heavily influenced by the subject before his killing spree.

The docu-series tries to re-examine Thomas' motivations behind this incident, as Roth says:

"When you read his journals, you go, was this mental illness? Was this some kind of abuse going on? Nobody really knows. It's not clear-cut what really happened."

Almost four decades after its occurrence in New Jersey, the case continues to haunt the people and investigators. In recent decades, it has earned an important place in paranormal investigations and research on Satanism and the occult.
