The CBS sitcom adaptation Ghosts (based on the OG UK show) aired back in October 2021 and ever since has gained quite some popularity among its viewers. With solid RT scores in terms of audience as well as critic reviews, the comedy show has been gaining quite some traction and, after a long streak of four seasons and 72 episodes, recently got renewed for two more seasons.

The story of Ghosts revolves around a haunted mansion where invisible supernatural forces/'Ghosts', suddenly get activated once living beings come to inhabit the place. Back in April 2024, Ghosts star Rebecca Wisocky, while on an interview with Variety, had talked about her character Hetty's fate and also explained in detail what actually happened to her.

Wisocky reportedly mentioned in a statement:

"I think loneliness is an interesting theme for her. When she died, after living a life of profound sadness and loneliness, she was alone for the first year of her afterlife. I look forward to that story at some point in our show, of that full year of isolation."

What did Rebecca Wisocky say about her character Hetty's death in Ghosts?

As we already know, the truth behind Hetty's death in Ghosts comes as a really late revelation in the Ghosts Season 3 episode titled 'Holes are Bad'. To quickly recap, in this episode, we see that the present owners of the Woodstone Mansion (Jay and Sam) are away on vacation.

While they were out of town, the other ghosts reckoned that Flower (portrayed by Sheila Carrasco) had been taken by the afterlife, but it eventually turned out that she had fallen into the well and was stuck there.

In a state of confusion and desperate to save Flower, all the ghosts start panicking (Jay and Sam could also not be contacted). It is at this point that Hetty takes matters into her own hands and pulls out a telephone cord from around her neck. However, no one ever noticed it because she always kept it hidden under her clothes.

Surprised by this move, Hetty drops a harrowing revelation about her past, mentioning that she had killed herself using the same cord when the mansion was surrounded by the forces over legal issues. She did it to clear herself of the crimes she had committed and also so that her son could inherit all her property.

According to her statement to Variety, star Rebecca Wisocky opened up about this particular episode, saying that it symbolizes the fact that anyone who is in a state of despair should be let to know that he/she is 'not alone'. To quote her exact words, per Variety:

"It’s truly my sincere hope that this episode in particular can reach someone that may be despairing and let them know that they’re not alone and that their existence matters."

As Wisocky further mentioned, it was the major theme of the show where one individual (stuck 'on the other side of her own mortality') reaches a point where a realization dawns for her and she reflects 'on that choice' she made years back. That self-realization eventually drives her to reveal the truth behind her own death and save a close one.

Wisocky also highlighted the fact that 'loneliness' is a major element in Hetty's character arc. Moreover, she had to witness her future generations make mistakes, causing their lives to be miserable - it's as if the responsibility of it falls on her because she made:

"This choice when she was 25 years old to abandon love for money."

The revelation about Hetty's death is also kind of coincidental, as Rebecca Wisocky would always fiddle with the piece of cord around her character's neck while shooting a scene. She further added:

"I think the audience probably assumed that she died of an overdose, as she’s so incredibly fond of cocaine. I was happy that they didn’t make that choice, so we get to preserve the horrible evil delight of her being a drug fiend."
