Sheriff Country is already heating up TV screens, and Christopher Gorham is right in the middle of it as Morena Baccarin’s ex-husband, Travis. The actor, who’s known for bringing depth to every role, instantly connected with this part.

Gorham told Country Living,

“I love the idea of this guy who, like me, found someone he connected with fairly young and despite outside forces stuck it out...”

It’s the use of history and heartbreak that makes his character on the show stand out.

The ex who never really left Mickey's story

What makes Sheriff Country so addictive isn’t just the crimes or the small-town politics, but it’s the messy, very human relationships like Travis and Mickey's that we see unfolding at the very core of the series.

Gorham says he saw something familiar in their story: Two people who grew up on opposite sides of life but still found a connection that survived time and trouble. He explains,

“Travis grew up with money and Mickey didn’t...so it’s like two kids from opposite sides of the tracks that fell in love in high school, had a baby, and decided to raise their kid together.”

Gorham admitted that his own 25-year marriage to actress Anel Lopez helped him understand Travis’s choices, thought process, and decisions. He found himself drawn to the long-lasting kind of love that’s full of complications but still cannot do without care. He elaborated,

“I can’t wait to explore why that ended after twenty years...”

This hints that the cracks in Travis and Mickey’s marriage might connect to their daughter Skye’s struggles.

And then there’s his co-star chemistry with Morena Baccarin, which is something that came naturally to both of them. “We discovered we’re both martini drinkers,” Gorham shared with a laugh.

“She’s wonderful to work with because she’s always game and present.”

Finding the heart behind the Sheriff Country storyline

While Sheriff Country may be a procedural at its core, Gorham makes sure Travis never feels like a supporting shadow to Mickey’s story.

His performance is of a man still figuring out how to stay close to the people he loves, even when everything around them is falling apart. He said,

“So far, I can report I’m not playing the bad guy in Sheriff Country...Travis is a good guy with his heart in the right place. I’m proud of what we’re making — these textured characters that people will relate to.”

Behind the scenes, the actor filmed Sheriff Country in Toronto with his family by his side.

“When my kids were younger, I was out of town a lot. Now we’re all together, and it’s been a blessing.”

He also shared how parenthood taught him to “let go” and evolve, which is a theme that strangely mirrors Travis’s journey on the show. He said,

“If you don’t let go of the kid you were raising last year, you won’t grow enough as a parent for this year...”

For Christopher Gorham, Sheriff Country isn’t just another show but a reminder of love’s endurance and how life changes even when people don’t want it to. His portrayal of Travis feels raw, lived-in, and deeply real, capturing that in-between space where love still lingers after goodbye.

With Morena Baccarin’s Mickey and Gorham’s Travis at its center, Sheriff Country proves that heartbreak can make the best kind of television.
