In the latest episode of The Rookie Season 7, Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) finally got her deserved win as she passed her Sergeant's exam. It was an emotional and heartwarming moment as Lucy got a win after several hardships that she had been facing since the last two seasons.

From her breakup with Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), not being able to become a detective, unsupportive parents, to her new role as a TO, which is not going well, this news brought some hopeful and positive result for her character.

More on this in our story.

In The Rookie Season 7 Episode 17, Lucy finally gets her well-deserved win

The last two seasons of The Rookie were hard for Lucy, as she went through several losses and hardships. Her parents were unsupportive of her career choice, Jackson’s death, and her not being able to become a detective, which was a career goal for her, made her never get any breathing room from facing one challenge after another. Moreover, her breakup with Tim and being buried alive by Caleb added to the tragedies she had to face.

Therefore, passing her Sergeant’s exam was a personal win for her character as she shares that she did not do for Tim. After being rejected for placing 17th in the Detective exam, due to powerful people’s interference, she made enemies to support Tim’s better job prospects, she felt she might not be able to achieve this win.

This makes the win more meaningful as she finally gets to believe in herself, which she was not able to do due to the many tragedies in her life that brought her down. However, this new win might bring significant change in Lucy’s character as she will be taking a night shift now, different from Tim and her other friends.

During an interview with ScreenRant, showrunner Alexi Hawley talked about the drama that this new setting might bring between Tim and Lucy. He said:

"It was a little bit of a "be careful what you wish for," which felt appropriate. We can never not twist something. I love that scene so much and her vulnerability and the way Tim took care of her and all that. To me, that's the heart of their relationship. And then the fact that she was top of the class and all that kind of stuff was, I think, really earned and really sweet. And then of course, you have to twist that. So now she's on the night shift."

He further added:

"For any of us who've done a lot of overnights, that's really tough on your body, and it's a tough adjustment to make, and potentially maybe it's not the most functional crew that she's working with. All of that to add drama and one last obstacle to the conversation that needs to happen between her and Tim now that some of the more practical obstacles are out of the way."

Lucy prioritizes herself in The Rookie Season 7

The Rookie Season 7 introduced several new growth arcs for Lucy's character, including her passing the Sergeant's exam. Although it was not a long-term dream for her but a promotion was indeed on the cards for her after losing her spot at becoming a detective.

However, that’s not all for her character, as in the season, Lucy has shown huge character growth after becoming a training officer for a problematic new rookie named Seth. Deciding to go to his high school to find out about his pathological lying was a decision she made herself by trusting her own gut instincts.

With this new promotion, Lucy has now gained some of her agency back, eliminating the power imbalance between her and Tim, and with how she handles the rookie, Seth will further display the positive growth of character.
