Mackenzie Davis joins Josh Hartnett in Netflix’s Newfoundland limited series
As previously mentioned, the series is set in Newfoundland, Canada, and will span six episodes, with Josh Hartnett in the lead role. The show, officially announced by Netflix in May 2025, is already generating buzz. According to a recent report by Deadline, Davis has now joined Hartnett in the upcoming horror series. With its storyline rooted in a Canadian town, it has also been confirmed that filming will take place on location in Newfoundland. The series is being developed by Jesse McKeown, best known for his work on The Umbrella Academy.
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Dr. Andrew Furey, also talked about how the small town is ideal for filming, and the show would definitely capture the beauty and essence of the province. He stated:
"Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich history and stunning landscapes make it the ideal canvas for a project of this magnitude. The province’s breathtaking landscapes, skilled crews, and deep storytelling traditions make it the perfect setting for a project of this scale. We look forward to working with the team to showcase all that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer."
Aside from McKeown and Hartnett, Jessica Rhoades and Louise Sutton (Black Mirror) are also executive producers of the series.
Other than that, the Newfoundland series also has a stellar writer’s team, which includes Jamie Childs, known for His Dark Materials and Sandman, Stephen Dunn, Natty Zavitz, Karen Walton (Orphan Black), and Helen Shaver, known for the popular series The Penguin.
Netflix Canada content directors Tara Woodbury and Danielle Woodrow talked about how excited they were to work on this exciting story curated by Jesse McKeown. They shared:
"Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama. We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience and adaptability."
Other than Hartnett (Paradise Lost, Oppenheimer, and Black Hawk Down) and Davis, no other members have been announced as of yet. The Canadian actress has appeared in popular shows such as Black Mirror and Station Eleven. Apart from that, she has also appeared in films like The F Word, Terminator: Dark Fate, and Speak No Evil, opposite James McAvoy.
