Daredevil: Born Again shocked viewers by killing off Foggy Nelson right in the opening minutes of the first episode. However, the show that we got is a retooled version that was partially reshot over the past year. Born Again was first announced in July 2022 at the SDCC, along with Avengers: Kang Dynasty, which was changed to Avengers: Doomsday in 2024.

The original version of Daredevil: Born Again consisted of eighteen episodes. This news was positively received by the fans; however, over time, some doubts started emerging as it was revealed that Born Again may or may not be a continuation of the original Netflix series. Furthermore, it was rumored that Foggy and Karen died off-screen in the original version of the series.

This is why Marvel decided to pull the plug on the original eighteen-episode version of the series in September 2023. However, unlike the Batgirl situation, Marvel decided to retool the series and pushed the release date to 2025. The reworked version (the one we got) confirmed that the series is indeed a continuation of the Netflix Daredevil series and even added Foggy and Karen.

Adding Foggy and Karen was the right decision, and actor Charlie Cox agrees with this feeling.

Charlie Cox believes that Foggy and Karen are the beating heart of the Daredevil series:

Charlie Cox was a part of a panel at the Fan Expo Cleveland that was held this year. In that panel, the actor who plays Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the series touched upon the original version of Born Again. After confirming that Foggy and Karen were not a part of the original version of the series, Cox went on to reveal that retooling the series to its current form was a prudent choice.

Then he went on to say that retaining Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll as Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, respectively, felt right because their well-being motivates him to be The Man Without Fear. The actor's exact words were

“We shot the show, and they weren’t involved at that point, and we really didn’t know what was going to happen with their character, or I didn’t know at least. It felt bittersweet. I always think you can’t underestimate the importance of Foggy and Karen in terms of the tone they set for that show. They are the center that allows Matt to go off and do these things and they give stakes to what he does, just in terms of storytelling.”

Appreciating his co-stars, Charlie Cox continued:

“They’re so beautifully portrayed by Deborah and Elden. It was pretty special having them come back. It was ironic because with that first scene with them, we’re reminiscing over the past because that made sense for the story, but it was also true for us, because we hadn’t seen each other for a long time. We hadn’t been on camera for years and so we were there reminiscing over the past.”

The idea that Foggy and Karen were the beating heart of Daredevil is something even Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane expressed in the February 2025 Empire interview. The showrunner revealed that upon boarding the series to retool it, he fought hard to bring back Foggy and Karen and was even willing to lose his job for this one thing.
