Maxton Hall Season 2 ending explained: Ruby and James face the consequences of a scandal

Maxton Hall Season 2 finally wrapped with an intense finale titled 'Reaching for the Stars' on November 28. Amazon Prime's German-language romantic series, based on Mona Kasten's 2018 novel Save Me, topped the platform's charts in more than 120 regions and became the most popular series.

The second season marked another year at Maxton Hall, where Ruby and James are trying to make their relationship work, with the society and James' father totally against them. While Ruby was shattered to learn that Alice Campbell had withdrawn from her scholarship (at Mortimer's behest), destroying her dream of studying at Oxford, the finale brought even more problems for her.

Maxton Hall Season 2 ending explained: Cordelia's will shocks the twins

One big plot point for James in the Maxton Hall Season 2 finale was his mother's will and the twins were certain that their mother would have left everything to them. Ophelia, Mortimer and the twins gather to hear Cordelia's will but to the children's surprise, Cordelia left everything to her husband and not her children. While James is already considering the idea that Mortimer had something to do with him, he maintains that their mother was a smart woman who made a good decision. He is happy that his children are stripped of their Beaufort name and wealth, which might make them realize their mistake, but they walk off.

At the shareholders' meeting, Elaine's father, Harold, who is also the biggest investor in Mortimer's company, steps away. Mortimer is left all alone to fend for his company and he again blames Ruby.

Elsewhere, Ruby is still reeling with the fallout from her Oxford scholarship and contemplating the risks of loving James. She comes home to shocking and tragic news in the Maxton Hall Season 2 finale. She learns that somebody has taken over her parents' bakery, leaving her mother without a job. It is Mortimer's doing and her family is devastated because they are left with no income.

The news makes Ruby determined and she decides to fight for her Oxford dream, now more than ever. With Sutton and Lexington's help, she gets into the regular scholarship exam and there is still hope for her scholarship.

James is fighting for Ruby's scholarship at his level in the Maxton Hall Season 2 finale. When he tries to convince Alice Campbell, she explains how she does not have a choice. Between Ruby and Mortimer, she had to choose the latter because he funds her programme for underprivileged children. James storms off from her office after calling her a coward and advising her to be braver like Ruby.

In the final moments of Maxton Hall Season 2, Sutton is called into Lexington's office and is questioned about his unethical relationship with his student. In a shocking moment, Sutton confesses his love for his 'student' but is confused when he is informed that the student's mother is on their way to the school. He is shocked to discover that his photo is not with Lydia, but with Ruby. He tries to correct his previous statement and denies having any romantic relationship with Ruby, but it is too late.

While he is arrested by the police, Ruby is called to Lexington's office just as she is about to sit for her scholarship exam. In the final moments, Ruby receives the disheartening news that she has been suspended from school and her Oxford dream is shattered once more. She hugs James and the couple feels helpless in the moment because the photo is solid proof.
