Netflix already boasts a great library of K-dramas, and the recent addition to it is Mercy for None, a violent and gritty no-nonsense revenge drama. Based on the webtoon titled Plaza Wars: Mercy for None by Oh Se-hyung and Kim Gyun-tae, the show follows Gi-Jun who comes back from his life of seclusion after his brother Gi-seok is murdered.
Mercy for None is completely set in the underworld of Seoul, and with each episode, new twists emerge that further deepen the mystery around the truth about Gi-seok’s murder. What initially seemed like a revenge move from Goo Bong-san’s son Joon-mo ultimately proved to be something a lot bigger than that.
As the involvement of Lee Joo-woon’s son, Lee Geum-son, becomes evident in the murder of Gi-seok, another character that emerges as a master player is Cha Yeong-do, a corrupt cop who goes by the name of Mr. Kim in the underworld.
Mr. Kim is one of the key villains in Mercy for None
Mercy for None follows the return of the ruthless Gi-Jun as he comes back after 11 years of a secluded life to avenge the murder of his brother Gi-seok. 11 years back, Gi-jun had gone into exile after taking blame for a crime he did not commit.
To help the viewers understand what prompted Gi-jun to go into exile, the show goes back 11 years, when there was a single gang named Beomyeongdong that ruled Seoul.
The gang leader was Chairman Oh, and both Lee Ju-woon and Gu Bong-san worked along with him as his main men, with Gi-jun as their best fighter. They proved to be a great team, as Chairman Oh was making significant progress both in regard to his power and his material wealth with Lee Ju-woon and Gu Bong-san by his side.
Naturally, rumors of Chairman Oh passing his leadership to these two men started to grow, and that did not please Seung-won, Chairman Oh’s son. This is where Cha Yeong-do, aka Mr. Kim, enters the picture.
He was already working with the gang, and when he saw a chance to cause a disruption, he instigated Gi-seok, who was a rookie member of the gang back then, to kill Seung-won.
Mr. Kim told Gi-seok that Seung-won might kill Gi-jun, as he was the right-hand man of the gang, and in desperation to save his brother from any kind of trouble, Gi-seok went ahead and murdered Seung-won.
This naturally caused huge chaos within the gang, and to save Gi-seok, Gi-jun encouraged Lee Ju-woon and Gu Bong-san to take over Chairman Oh by staging a coup. The two men emerge victorious over Chairman Oh, and that leads to the formation of two separate groups, the Juwoon Group and the Bongsan Group.
To ensure that his brother remains safe, Gi-jun takes the blame for the murder of Chairman Oh’s son and is banished. He promises to live away from all of this and it is on this condition that his life is spared. To show his dedication to his promise, Gi-jun’s Achilles tendon is sliced, and he retreats into the forest for a peaceful life.
Gi-jun also makes Ju-woon promise to take care of his brother, something that the old man ensured to do. However, when Gi-seok is murdered, it is eventually revealed that Joo-woon’s son, Lee Geum, conspired with Mr. Kim to take Gi-seok out so that he could ultimately rule over both the Juwoon and Bongsan groups.
Planning strategically with Mr. Kim, Gi-jun is initially led to believe that it is Joon-mo behind his brother’s death. However, ultimately he comes to know Mr. Kim’s involvement in the whole thing and how it was because of him that Gi-seok took that extreme step 11 years back.
Mr. Kim, therefore, played an extremely important character in Mercy for None, who caused extreme chaos not once but twice. He is ultimately killed by Gi-jun, who makes sure that no one responsible for his brother’s death is left alive.
Mercy for None can be streamed on Netflix.
