Hulu's multi-camera freshman comedy series Mid-Century Modern will not return for a second season as the network has canceled the show after one season.

Series creator Max Mutchnick announced this news on his Instagram with a heartfelt post with the show's main cast and crew. He wrote:

“Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”

Mid-Century Modern follows three middle-aged gay men, Bunny, Jerry and Arthur, who decide to live their golden years in Palm Springs together, after an unexpected death. The tragedy prompts them to rethink their life and they move in with their wealthiest friend's (Bunny) mother. The sitcom follows their day-to-day adventures as they live their golden years as a chosen family, supporting each other through tough times.

Hulu's multi-camera comedy series was led by the golden trio of Nathan Lane (Bunny), Matt Bomer (Jerry) and Nathan Lee Graham (Arthur), with actress Linda Lavin in the supporting character of Sybil, Bunny's mother. Mid-Century Modern also marks Lavin's final role, before her death in December 2024. The series also featured many guest appearances by stars, including Pamela Adlon, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Zane Phillips, Esther Moon Wu and more.

Hulu cancels Mid-Century Modern after one season

The multi-camera comedy series premiered on March 28, 2025, where all ten episodes were dropped at once for a perfect binge-watching experience. While Mid-Century Modern managed to garner an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and received positive audience reviews, it could not replicate this success with streaming numbers.

As is the case with many present-day multi-camera comedies, the Max Mutchnick-created sitcom failed to secure a place in Nielsen's Top 10 charts and gave an average streaming performance. While Hulu has not given an official statement on the sitcom's cancelation, a Deadline report suggests that the show was canceled due to low viewership and a small audience base.

Though the audience appreciated the show's humour and nostalgic feel, it failed to reach a wider audience base. The classic sitcom sensibilities with contemporary themes surely had potential for Season 2, but Hulu axed the series prematurely. Additionally, strong performances by sitcom king Nathan Lane and Will and Grace star Matt Bomer elevated the show to new heights, but they were not enough to sustain it in the current era of streaming.

Mid-Century Modern was also nominated for four Emmy Awards, including direction, production design, sound mixing and editing.

The Legendary sitcom director James Burrows earned his 28th Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for Mid-Century Modern Episode 9, 'Here’s To You, Mrs. Schneiderman'. The episode followed the trio making sense of Bunny's mother's sudden passing.

This particular storyline was added to honour Lavin's sudden passing in December 2024, due to lung cancer. She had shot for seven out of ten episodes, following which the creators reworked the remaining episodes, while mourning this tragic loss.

You can stream Mid-Century Modern on Hulu.
