Countdown on Prime Video may not have garnered much support from the critics, but the series starring Jensen Ackles has amassed its own fan following. The series has been consistently getting good viewership and has been in the Top 10 on the streamer’s list. Countdown is currently in Season 1. Creator and writer of the drama series, Derek Haas, is optimistic that the show will get a Season 2 renewal.
Haas shared that he is delighted with the response and is keeping his hopes up to continue the series. While speaking to TV Insider, Haas said,
“I’m feeling good. I haven’t done streaming before, so kind of all of the analytics are new. It’s different from when I was doing network and you knew the next morning, like, oh, this is doing great, whatever. But I’m excited because it feels like we continue to pick up viewers every week and so that gets me all excited.”
Countdown is a crime drama series on Amazon’s Prime Video, which premiered on June 25, 2025. Haas is the showrunner and executive producer for the show. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The first season will comprise of 13 episodes, which will be released weekly. The finale is slated to release on September 3, 2025.
Haas had previously worked on One Chicago and FBI in the role of Executive Producer. In the interview, he also shared that he plans to keep the show going, as long as viewers keep tuning in. He said,
“I said this before with Chicago Fire way back when. I was like, as long as people keep showing up, we’ll keep making it. Now did I think that would go for 14 years? I had no idea. So I will say the same thing about this: As long as people keep watching and digging it, then we will keep making it.”

Countdown follows the story of the murder of a Homeland Security officer, which leads to agents and officers coming together to find the suspect as part of a secret task force. However, the hunt would lead them to a shocking discovery. With conspiracies and thrilling chases, the officers are fighting against the clock to stop a bigger threat in play.
The official synopsis of Countdown states,
“When an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight, LAPD detective Mark Meachum is recruited to a secret task force, alongside undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement, to investigate. But the hunt for the killer soon uncovers a plot far more sinister than anyone could have imagined, kicking off a race against time to save a city of millions.”
The show currently has 38% critics score and 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While a critic, Aramide Tinubu of Variety wrote,
“Unfortunately, though the show has all of the fundamentals needed for an engaging action series, “Countdown” grows duller by the episode.”
As per Rotten Tomatoes, a viewer, Lisa u, wrote,
“Absolutely thrilled with the series. Watched it mainly to see Jensen and Eric but got so much more. Love the series, hope it will get a season 2”
Other than Ackles, the cast of the crime drama series also includes Eric Dane, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Elliot Knight and Uli Latukefu.
