Modern Family has long been the go-to comfort show for sitcom lovers. It is about the witty and hilarious members of three families that are related to each other. Phil Dunphy’s lovable dad jokes have since become the epitome of dad jokes. Apart from the fun, the show's also got a lot of heart.

But for some fans, things took a turn after they stumbled upon a little Canadian sitcom called Schitt’s Creek. One Redditor, IWrestleSausages, recently summed up this unexpected shift by writing that the show "ruined Modern Family" for them.

As binge-watchers across the globe discover Schitt’s Creek, some are beginning to look at Modern Family through a slightly more critical lens. It’s not that Modern Family suddenly became bad. It’s just that Schitt’s Creek may have raised the sitcom bar.

Schitt’s Creek is one of those rare comedies that gets better the more you watch it. The specialty of the show is how much the characters grow. It's about how the spoiled and clueless characters slowly reveal their softer and more genuine sides.

The show also gives you real moments that feel honest and warm. Be it David learning to love or Alexis figuring out who she is, every character has a journey. And that's why the show sticks with you.

The original Reddit post by IWrestleSausages gets straight to the point:

"To be clear, I still like Modern Family very much. It is the ultimate comfort watch, and certainly the first few seasons are very strong. That said, the relationships in it always bothered me. I'm aware its a farce comedy where miscommunication is key, but sometimes the characters are so toxic to one another (mitch and cam specifically) it's hard to root for them at all. Schitt's Creek has just blown away everything else that i ve ever watched. It sits so comfortably on that line between comedy and drama: the plotlines are low key because all we really want to do is hang out with the characters, because you come to adore them so much. I know that it and MF are aiming at different goals, but in terms of humour, heart and beauty I can't think of anything that comes close."

Multiple users said that Modern Family started to feel overly scripted in comparison. One commenter, madncqt, wrote:

"I love both shows, too, and I'll boil it down by saying Schitt's Creek demonstrated how to be relevant, campy, sharp and yet always classy. Some might say pretentious, but I'd say timeless! Modern family, especially later seasons, stretched into sitcom gimmickry and caricature."

David and Patrick’s relationship in Schitt’s Creek stands out because of how naturally it all happens. Patrick starts off as David’s business partner, helping him open Rose Apothecary, but their connection quickly develops.

Their relationship is special because of how Patrick brings out the best in David. He’s patient, kind, and never overwhelmed by David’s insecurities. One of the most memorable moments is Patrick’s acoustic version of “Simply the Best,” which completely disarms David and shows how deeply they care for each other. Their love story is emotionally honest and full of growth and trust.

One Redditor, LaLa_LaSportiva, wrote:

"Watching their relationship made me so happy. Them singing to each other was genius. And watching Moira's face and reaction while Patrick sang to David, is one of my most favorite scenes on television ever."

Another one, ReginaGeorgian, wrote:

"I love that we get to see David and Patrick in bed in their pajamas together just like a million straight sitcom couples. Somehow the normalcy of that intimacy really struck me."

Both Modern Family and Schitt’s Creek explore love, family, and relationships, but they approach them in different ways. In Modern Family, relationships often play out in funny scenes with misunderstandings, goofy arguments, and heartwarming resolutions by the end of the episode.

On the other hand, Schitt’s Creek takes a more emotional route. The relationships progress gradually with more focus on individual growth and moments of connection.

Modern Family shows the humor in being stuck with the people you love, and Schitt’s Creek shows what happens when unlikely people choose to love and support each other even when they don’t have to. But it seems like Schitt's Creek resonated more with these fans, as one Redditor, monislaw, wrote:

"I wish more shows showed couple just going through regular every day issues, and not unrealistic miscommunication-based drama, as well as show more love through teasing and not only grand gestures, it's just such a comfort to see a nice mature(ish david :D) couple doing regular couple things and not be assaulted by a bunch of red flags."

Still, this isn’t a Modern Family bashing party. Most commenters made it clear they still have a soft spot for the Pritchetts, Dunphys, and Tuckers. One user, a sxeoompaloompa, summed it up perfectly:

"So I just started Modern Family after watching Schitt's Creek twice already and yes, totally agree. I think we at least have to take the times each were made into consideration. The 6 years between 2009 and 2015 were HUGE in terms of rights and visibility for LGBT. That said Cam and Mitchell's relationship is absolutely the hardest for me to watch in the first couple seasons I've seen so far. I also think MF had to walk so SC could run."

So, it’s not about replacing one with the other. It is rather about realizing that sitcoms can grow, evolve, and sometimes lead you to even better ones.
