High Potential season 2 concluded its first episode by finally revealing Roman, Morgan's former partner, who left her nearly fifteen years before the show's events.
For those who don't know much about Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), she was working as a cleaning lady before turning into a high-potential detective consulted by the local police department. She helps them with their case while secretly using their resources to find her ex, Roman, with whom she also had a daughter, Ava.
Yet, it's only at the cliffhanger ending of the second season's premiere that Mekhi Phifer was revealed as Roman. It happens after Daphne (Javicia Leslie) and Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) knock on a motel door, considering it an address of Morgan's estranged ex, only to find the man opening the door himself.
Yet, some fans reportedly believed that the man who opened the door, scared of the LAPD, may not be Roman after all. In line with this, showrunner Todd Harthan spoke with TVLine about his discussions with Phifer to establish Roman's story. He revealed how these discussions led to some creative ideas by saying,
“The more time I spend with Mekhi talking about his role and how he’s used throughout the fabric of the season, the more good ideas spark for the blanks we want to fill in about that Roman story.”
High Potential Season 2 premiere shows Morgan dealing more personally with her new case

In High Potential season 2, Morgan addresses a missing person's case and has a hunch about who might be the mastermind, Game Maker, behind the operations.
In her case, it's not usually just a hunch, considering her skills to analyze a crime scene are often better than her new detective colleagues. So, she can locate clues that others may have ignored or dismissed, knowing well enough how they can connect to a said case, and help her find the culprit with her high potential.
Yet, in the second season, she seems more personally involved with her investigation, probably because it has to do with some missing children. Showrunner Todd Harthan elaborated on this part of her arc in the new season during his TVLine interview, saying,
“With this case in particular, she’s in a different place emotionally. She’s more vulnerable than she usually is because a really sadistic person got close to her children. So that’s the only reason they were like, ‘Yes, you’re right almost all of the time, but in this one instance, I don’t know, Morgan, your emotions are getting the best of you.'”
In the High Potential season 2 premiere, Morgan believed that David Peck (David Giuntoli) was behind the criminal case, and, by the season premiere's end, Giuntoli appears on screen, in front of her. As a showrunner, Harthan appreciated Giuntoli's performance, much like he spoke about his creative collaboration with Mekhi Phifer. Speaking about Giuntoli, Harthan told TVLine,
“I love what he brought to the party. He and Kaitlin [Olson] are such fantastic scene partners, and I’d just say you should expect the unexpected on this show.”
