Mr. Robot: Creator Sam Esmail shares a story of a hacker who pitched him a spinoff idea

Actors Rami Malek and Christian Slater were joined by Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot, to celebrate the show's 10th anniversary at New York Comic Con. Among several questions asked, moderator Josh Horowitz also asked Esmail about a spinoff series of the fan-favorite thriller show.

Esmail then shared the story of how he was hacked recently. He was prank-called, and Esmail went along with talking to the caller and learned that it was a fan of the show. After playing along for a while, Esmail asked the hacker about the purpose of the call. The hacker told him he wanted a show starring Carly Chaikin, who played Darlene and Joey Bada**.

As per Esmail, the hacker said:

"Dude, I just really want season of Carly Chaiken [who played Darlene, Elliot’s sister] and Joey Bada$$ [who played Leon] - can you do that spinoff?"

Later, addressing the audience, the creator shared that while he would love to go back to the 'Mr. Robot World', the show ended on a perfect note, due to which it is impossible to return. He stated:

"I would love nothing more than to go back into the Mr. Robot world. But we told that story and ended it in a really great way."

Esmail's inspiration behind Mr. Robot

The 2015 show ran for 4 seasons and followed the story of Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek). Alderson struggles with numerous challenges, such as drug abuse, DID, and depression, which sometimes cause him delusions and paranoia. The only method he knows to connect with people is through hacking them and finding out private information about them, which often results in vigilante-type activities. Later, he is hired by Mr. Robot to work in his fsociety to bring down E Corp.

In a 2015 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Esmail shared that his inspiration for the series came from the Arab Spring. He was inspired by how young adults in Egypt brought a positive change in their country with the use of technology and social media.

His other inspiration was the 2008 recession. At the NY Comic Con, Esmail shared that the world at the time looked as if it was in deep crisis, but also acknowledged that compared to the current scenario, it looks like nothing, and when asked if the show would have been made today, he replied:

"Are you kidding? Honestly, it’s like the show wasn’t nearly as f*cked up as it would be today! It’s like Pleasantville, now."
