Murdaugh: Death in the Family Episode 7 recap – Alex’s web of lies starts to crumble

Murdaugh: Death in the Family is inspired by the harrowing real-life story of the Murdaugh family. The Hulu true-crime limited series delves deep into the chaos that led to the murder of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. In episode 7 titled ‘On the Road You Take To Avoid It’, we find Alex Murdaugh (played by Jason Clarke) dealing with the mounting financial strain as his web of lies finally starts to breakdown.

In Murdaugh: Death in the Family episode 6 titled ‘June 7th’, we find Maggie (played by Patricia Arquette) has been staying away from Alex and even contemplating divorce. Paul (played by Johnny Berchtold) is trying to start fresh, working with Uncle John (played by Patch Darragh). But the two come back home when they learn about Randolph’s (played by Gerald McRaney) health condition. The two get shot by someone outside the kennel, leaving Alex panic-stricken. Alex’s lies are exposed in Murdaugh: Death in the Family Episode 7

Alex shares the dreadful news about Maggie and Paul’s murder to Buster (played by Will Harrison), who is shaken by the revelation. In Murdaugh: Death in the Family Episode 7, David Owen (played by Eric Goins) and Laura Rutland (played by Tyner Rushing) begin their investigation, starting with Alex. But he comes out clean with a solid alibi. He was with his mother during the time of the murders. However, the investigators quickly catch on to the fact that Alex is pushing revenge crime narrative.

The whole family is standing with Alex through the ordeal in Murdaugh: Death in the Family Episode 7. Buster is overly worried, especially for his father, who had managed to convince his family about the revenge plot. Alex claims that it is retaliation against Paul for Mallory Beach’s death. When Randolph leans about the murder, he is absolutely distraught. The news has now also reached the media by now.

Alex learns that Beach family dropped the civil suit for the boat crash due to the circumstances. But his reprieve is short-lived as they learn that his father, Randolph, has died.

At Maggie and Paul’s memorial, Alex tells Shelly (played by Ursula O. Robinson), his mother’s caretaker, to state that he was at home longer in exchange of financial support.

The investigation also takes a new turn when Rogan (played by Callan Wilson) shares that he heard Alex’s voice during his call with Paul, before he was killed. Shelly also tells the investigators that Alex offered her financial help to confirm his alibi. Laura points out that Alex was exceptionally clean for someone who checked the bloodied bodies before calling the authorities.

In Murdaugh: Death in the Family Episode 7, during interrogation, David and Laura present all the evidence to Alex that makes him a prime suspect in the murder case. They also reveal that the shell casings from the murders matches Alex’s weapon. Alex is let go, albeit with the knowledge that they are onto him.


Murdaugh Murders Podcast takes shape in Murdaugh: Death in the Family Episode 7

Mandy Matney (played by Brittany Snow) is investigating the case for her Murdaugh Murders Podcast. She brings up family’s history and the ongoing murder investigation. Stephen Smith’s case once again sees the light of the day.

Randy (played by Noah Emmerich) learns about Alex’s deceitful schemes including scamming clients and stealing funds from the family law firm. Alex tries to save himself from getting fired by revealing the truth about his addiction. But Randy doesn’t want him at the firm, however, as his brother, he does offer to help him with rehab. Alex starts spiraling out of control.

In Murdaugh: Death in the Family Episode 7, Alex will take Cousin Eddie (played by Mark Pellegrino) to an isolated place and asks him to shoot him, but Eddie refuses and runs away. Alex gets a head injury after he is accidently knocked to the ground. At the hospital, Alex will make up a story of someone trying to kill him. But Eddie had already confessed to the investigators, which Alex tries to negate. Later, Alex will tell Buster that he had done so to get an insurance claim to help his son.

At the end of Murdaugh: Death in the Family Episode 7, Alex is taken to rehab and Buster is back home. He looks around alarmed at the house’s condition, trying to process the hard truth about his family.

Murdaugh: Death in the Family is available to stream on Hulu.
