The series tells the true story of the murders of two members of the same family that took place in 2021. The affluent Murdaugh family had a seemingly perfect life in their South Carolina community. However, everything changed in 2019 when their son, Paul, got involved in a boat crash.

Two years later, Paul was found dead along with his mother, Maggie. The investigation into the case brought out some dark secrets of the family. The official synopsis of Murdaugh: Death in the Family reads:
