NCIS is a successful series that centers on special agents who solve crimes. They work for the Navy and work together to catch criminals. The series came back with a new episode on November 11. This was the fifth episode from Season 23.

The episode was titled Now and Then, with a story that centers on both the past and the present. A man named Sheriff Thomas Mulligan escaped from prison, which seemed very strange, as he was just three weeks away from being released. Many prisoners in his case would wait, but Mulligan probably had a powerful reason to escape.

NCIS had to reopen a former case from the 1990s, on which old agents, including Franks and Gibbs, had worked. The team brought back a retired agent called Vera Strickland. She supported them in figuring out what really happened in the case. The episode demonstrated how one lie can hurt many individuals for several years.

Why did Mulligan escape in NCIS?

Mulligan broke out of prison with another man, Luther Stokes. Stokes was a prisoner with a dark past, having worked with the mob. He had killed several people in the past for money. His malicious and rebellious core was very different from that of Mulligan.

Mulligan was a quiet individual who kept to himself for the most part in the prison. Strokes often got into fights during his time of imprisonment with other inmates. All the prison officials failed to comprehend why they left together. The police found Stokes dead near the prison. They believed Mulligan was the one who murdered Stokes. However, there was a clue. A correctional officer lost his phone, and NCIS suspected that the two prisoners had taken it with them. They tracked the phone and discovered that Mulligan had visited Vera Strickland's home.

Unexpected encounter with Vera

Vera used to work on Mulligan's case thirty years ago, along with Gibbs and Franks. Now she was retired and had not many cases to work on. Mulligan came to her home. They sat down and drank tea all together. He asked her for clothes and money, and also wanted some time off to run away.

However, NCIS got there before he could run. Mulligan cut their car tires, but he did not hurt anyone. The boss almost arrested Vera for supporting him. She said she wanted to feel involved in a case after years of inactivity and wanted to help solve it, as she remembered every detail from the case.

What happened thirty years ago

Mulligan said he killed a man named Louise Burke, but that was not the truth. A woman called Lainey Sims was the actual killer, and people called her Birdie.

She was pregnant, and Mulligan loved her deeply, sacrificing himself to protect her. He stayed in jail for thirty years for her, but Lainey never came to see him. She died three years before his release, and Mullihan still thought about her each day and drew pictures of her in prison.

The actual case revelation

Evidence claimed Louis Burke attacked a man called Grandpa Dom. Burke was rude and obnoxious to everyone in town. He carried a baseball bat with him everywhere he went. Burke killed Grandpa Dom, but the story revealed that the truth was different. Bruke hurt his own shoulder before Dom was dead and could not even swing a bat. The bat did not match the crime scene evidence as well. Bruke was killed for something he did not do, and the whole community blamed the wrong person.

A father who protected his son

NCIS finally uncovered the reason behind Mulligan's escape. His son Jason was in danger. Jason was born out of wedlock between Lainey and Mulligan, but he thought Mac was his father. Jason eventually learned the truth and also found out the killer behind Grandpa Dom.

The real killer was the Dom's grandson, Congressman Jimmy Wallace. Wallace committed the crime to acquire Dom's land. The land had water, and the town desperately needed the resource. Jason was hell-bent on killing Wallace, and Mulligan escaped to stop his son.

The consequences of the chaos

Despite the chaos, the team stopped Jason before he could hurt Wallace. They tested Wallace's DNA, and it matched the bat from the crime scene. Wallace was convicted at last and went to jail for killing his grandfather. Mulligan killed Stokes in self-defence and was released by NCIS on the same grounds. Jason and Mulligan finally reunited as father and son, starting a new life together. The long-standing mystery was finally solved at NICS.
