Netflix’s live-action adaptation, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, is a much-awaited live-action series from the streaming giant, which will bring back the 1990s environmental superhero, Captain Planet, to our screens.

The live-action series will be produced by Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Greg Berlanti's Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. The combination of three big production houses with the top streaming platform, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, has already created buzz around the project.

As mentioned, Netflix’s Captain Planet and the Planeteers got a huge update with DiCaprio and Berlanti's production house joining hands to produce the live-action series. The series will narrate the story of the environmental superhero, who, along with his team, will attempt to address various climate issues affecting Earth.

As per Variety, the statement about the superhero series, according to Captain Planet Foundation, reads as:

"In the show, Gaia, the spirit of the planet, assembles a team of five young ‘planeteers’ from nations around the world, who can summon Captain Planet to help them solve ecological and other global problems ‘by their powers combined.’"

It continued:

"The show was widely acclaimed for its treatment difficult issues such as pollution, poaching, deforestation, as well as more social issues including drug addiction, HIV/ AIDS, and bullying in a way that educated, entertained, but also activated its young audience."

Other than Berlanti and DiCaprio producing, Captain Planet and the Planeteers has also added one of the creators of Mrs. Davis, Tara Hernandez, who was also part of the writing team of TBBT and Young Sheldon, as the writers of the superhero series.

Further, Jennifer Davisson, Leigh London Redman, and Sarah Schechter will also be joining the series as executive producers.

The 1990s animated series was produced by Hanna-Barbera and DIC Entertainment, while Hollywood veterans such as Whoopi Goldberg and Ed Asner voiced the characters in the animated series.

Although Netflix hasn’t provided an official comment on Captain Planet and the Planeteers yet, this is not the first time a project on the cult environmental hero was in talks. For instance, Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell was said to be developing a movie about Captain Planet for DiCaprio in 2018. In 2023, he provided an update about the same while talking to Entertainment Tonight and shared:

"I know DiCaprio is super passionate about it. I’m super passionate about it. I think it could be great…I want that one to work. I’d love to play that superhero."

While Powell’s Captain Planet movie is still in talks, Netflix’s Captain Planet and the Planeteers might be happening before that, with this hopeful update on the live-action series about the environmental superhero that we might be in need of right now.
