For three years, fans have been awaiting updates on Line of Duty Season 7. The hit police drama remained a top performer on BBC Two and later BBC One during its run between 2012 and 2021.

However, following the conclusion of season 6, the BBC neither renewed nor canceled the show, leaving its fate uncertain. A few weeks ago, British media reported that the production team might start work on the Line of Duty Season 7 soon.

Series star Martin Compston, who played the lead role of DS Steve Arnott, has now opened up about the potential return of the popular series. In an interview with The Sun, the actor said the show will not come back just for the sake of it, and the team will make a seventh season only for the ‘right reasons’:

“Because we’re all so close and we all want the best for the show, we wouldn’t do it again just for the sake of it. We really care about the quality of it. So if we come back, it would be for the right reasons.”

In his interview, Martin Compston added that the cast and the creative team of Line of Duty are currently busy with other projects, and hence, it might be too difficult to collaborate and bring the show back. However, he agreed that they constantly have discussions about making Season 7 a possibility:

“We’re always talking about possibilities and schedules and whatnot. Everybody’s got stuff going on at the minute, so I think anything, unfortunately, would be a way off.”

Compston further said that he actually enjoys the suspense over the future of the show:

“It’s amazing. It’s the best feeling as an actor when you feel like the whole country’s in the palm of your hand with what’s coming next, and there’s only a couple of you in that secret of who’s surviving and what’s going on.”

BBC has not yet made any official announcement about the show’s return. Line of Duty follows DS Steve Arnott, who joins the Anti-Corruption Unit 12 after refusing to cover up a police shooting. He works with DC Kate Fleming and Superintendent Ted Hastings to uncover corruption in the Central Police.

Each season focuses on a new case involving a possibly corrupt officer. The show debuted on BBC Two in 2012 and received wide acclaim, after which it was moved to BBC One in 2017. Apart from Martin Compston as Steve Arnott, the show starred Vicky McClure as Kate Fleming, Adrian Dunbar as Ted Hastings, and Craig Parkinson as Matthew "Dot" Cottan.

Line of Duty is available to stream on BritBox.
