NBC's Chicago Med Season 11 will surely surprise fans as OG Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) is checking into Gaffney Chicago Medical Center once again.

Showrunner Allen McDonald is certainly making good on his promise to fans by bringing back iconic characters on-screen. Gehlfuss is the second actor to return to the medical procedural, following Rachel DiPillo's Dr. Sarah Reese, who earlier returned in Season 10. In an interview, McDonald shared his desire to revisit past characters in Chicago Med Season 11 as:

"I think there’s a fear in storytelling, television specifically, that if you bring back old characters that you’re kind of going back into the past and not being in the present. But I think life is both. And I think we were successful in telling stories of the present...''

He added:

''I think that in the One Chicago world, it’s completely legitimate to check in on people, characters that we love and we miss, and what fun to see them interact with the new doctors that the audience knows, but they don’t.''

Joining the list of returning characters is Nick Gehlfuss, one of the lead characters since the Season 1 pilot. An attending physician at Gaffney, Dr. Will Halstead, is a beloved character in the franchise and a crucial connection to its sister series, Chicago P.D., being the elder brother of Det. Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer).

More on this in our story.

Chicago Med Season 11: Dr. Will's surprising return to Gaffney

Chicago Med Season 11 couldn't come soon enough, as fans cannot wait to see Nick Gehlfuss back in his scrubs as Dr. Will Halstead. Last seen in the Season 8 finale, Will finally got his happy ending with Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) after he reconnected with her in Seattle. Will eventually settle in Seattle with Natalie, officially becoming a stepfather to her son, Owen.

Since Gehfluss' departure from the show in Season 8, fans had been anticipating news on Will and Natalie's life in Seattle with Owen. His exciting return to Gaffney might bring back some exclusive details about the couple's life together.

Additionally, since McDonald has expressed his desire to revisit past characters and storylines, DeVitto's Natalie might also return in a guest appearance. It is still not confirmed how many episodes of Season 11 Gehfluss will appear in.

Will Halstead could not have returned at a better time in Gaffney, considering the ongoing drama with his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Hannah Asher’s (Jessy Schram) pregnancy storyline. Since Dr. Hannah is at the center of much mystery and drama in Chicago Med, one can only speculate that Will's surprising return is connected to his ex-girlfriend's storyline.

Chicago Med will return with Season 11 on NBC on October 1, 2025.
