Chicago Med star Marlyne Barrett bids farewell after a decade, ahead of Season 11

Marlyne Barrett, one of the original cast members of Chicago Med, is confirmed to be leaving the show after a decade of portraying Maggie Lockwood, an ER nurse in Gaffney Medical. She was one of the three remaining original cast members who had been with the show since its 2015 premiere.

The announcement comes ahead of the Chicago Med Season 11 premiere, set to air on October 1, 2025. As reported by Deadline, Marlyne Barrett is bidding farewell to the medical drama, citing personal reasons. While she might be leaving for now, TV Line has revealed that Barrett might return for the role in the future, as the exit is not permanent.

While Barrett is leaving, another original character, Dr. Will Halstead, will be returning in Season 11 in a guest-starring role.

Chicago Med’s Marlyne Barrett will not be returning in Season 11

Marlyne Barrett’s storyline was one of the most poignant in Chicago Med. She has led union negotiations for the nurses in Season 10 and has gone through life-threatening situations, such as being diagnosed with breast cancer in Season 5.

Just like her character in Chicago Med, Marlyne Barrett was also diagnosed with ovarian and uterine cancer in 2022. Her journey through multiple surgeries and chemotherapy resulted in the cancer’s remission. Therefore, while achieving dramatic feats as Maggie Lockwood, Barrett also endured and survived a real-life battle with cancer.

Other than her impactful storyline, Barrett’s Lockwood was also regarded as a friend to many, especially Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), and later Dr. John Frost (Darren Barnet). Marlyn Barrett's absence in the newest Season would definitely impact the show, as she was the ER charge nurse and had been a pivotal character in the medical drama since day one.

While it is reported that she won’t be returning for Season 11 of Chicago Med, due to personal reasons, it is also reported that the exit is not permanent and we might see nurse Maggie Lockwood in future seasons, even if it is a guest starring role like Nick Gehlfuss’s Dr. Will Halstead, who is confirmed to return in Season 11, after leaving the show in 2023.

Marlyne Barrett will be missed by fans in Season 11 of Chicago Med for her contribution as Maggie Lockwood by leading the charge of the Gaffney Medical’s Emergency Department, taking care of her patients, and also being a helping hand and support for the doctors of the hospital.
