Junior Edwards, the well-known alligator hunter and longtime face of Swamp People, has died at the age of 61. His grandson, Willie Edwards, confirmed the news in an emotional Facebook post on July 26, writing,

“Rest easy pawpaw… you will be extremely missed.”

Junior was an original cast member when the show began on the History Channel in 2010, appearing through season 6, and briefly returning in season 12 in 2021. Fans remember him not just for his no-nonsense hunting style, but also for working side-by-side with his son and grandson, making him a core part of the show’s family dynamic.

Earlier this month, Willie had asked fans to pray for Junior as he battled health issues, though no official cause of death has been released. Tributes from former co-stars like Ashley “Deadeye” Jones and Ronnie Adams poured in over the weekend.

Many described him as a legend and one of the most skilled gator hunters in Louisiana. Swamp People followers across social media have been sharing favorite moments and offering condolences, showing just how deep his impact went. Junior’s death marks the end of a chapter for the series and its loyal fan base.

Beyond the family announcement and wave of tributes, fans of Swamp People have been revisiting Junior Edwards’ most memorable moments from the show, which helped shape the series into a hit for the History Channel.

Junior joined the cast in its very first season in 2010 and quickly became a standout due to his straightforward approach to gator hunting and his willingness to pass down his skills to his son, Willie. He chased gators and ensured his family could do the same.

He remained with the show through season 6 in 2015 and returned briefly for season 12 in 2021. When he came back, his Facebook announcement

“Surprise… look who’s back” sparked excitement among longtime viewers who’d missed his presence.

His return also confirmed that fans still held strong loyalty toward the original cast.

Just weeks before his death, Willie had posted asking for prayers, noting that his grandfather was not doing well. That post sparked concern in the Swamp People fan groups online, many of whom had followed the family for over a decade.

When news of Junior’s passing became official, castmates like Ashley Jones described seeing him bring monster gators into Duffy’s Gas Station in Pierre Part. Ronnie Adams also shared his condolences, calling Junior one of the realest outdoorsmen the show ever had.

Although the cause of death hasn’t been officially released, the family has made clear how sudden and painful the loss is. Fans have continued to share clips and quotes online, remembering him not as a TV personality but as a man who hunted for a living, taught his family well, and stayed true to his roots.
