Hulu's adult animated series Solar Opposites quietly made its Netflix debut in the US on September 28.
With this, the alien sitcom broke streaming ground and became the first-ever Hulu original to debut on another streaming platform. Additionally, the show is also slated to be available to international audiences later this year and will remain on Hulu and Disney+.
Created by Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty co-creator) and Mike McMahan, the adult animated sitcom follows an alien family of four: Korvo, Terry, Jesse, and Yumyulack, from the planet of Shlorp. Planet Shlorp had sent hundreds of ships to different planets to colonize them, but the lead family accidentally crash-lands on Earth and is forced to stay there by humans.
Solar Opposites follows the adventures of the family of four as they decide whether Earth is a good place or not.
All five seasons of the sitcom are now available on Netflix in the US. The sixth and final season (which will make its Hulu debut on October 13, 2025) is also expected to debut on Netflix next year.
More on this in our story.
Hulu's Solar Opposites makes its Netflix debut
While Disney has previously licensed its original movies to other platforms, the alien comedy is the first Hulu original series to be licensed to another streaming platform. In an era of streaming wars, this move is surprising, given that Hulu and Netflix are both streaming juggernauts with impressive content libraries spanning all genres.
According to a Deadline report, Netflix wanted Solar Opposites as part of its adult animation library, and Disney agreed to license the show. The strategic decision made by Disney is not much of a surprise, considering the exposure and audience the Hulu original will receive on its new streaming home. While Solar Opposites currently sits at a Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% and has largely received positive reviews from the audience, it is underrated.
The five seasons of this comedy will surely benefit and find a new audience base on Netflix, which is already home to many other adult animated series like Big Mouth and BoJack Horseman.
Additionally, Solar Opposites' Netflix US debut could not have come at a better time, as the show is gearing up for its final season premiere. While Disney had pulled its content library from other platforms after Disney+, it restarted third-party licensing in 2024. Many original series were licensed to Netflix for 18 months, including This is Us, How I Met Your Mother, and Prison Break. All shows recorded increased viewership on Netflix, which suggests this symbiotic relationship between streaming platforms is beneficial.
Now streaming on Netflix, Solar Opposites has the chance to reach a wider audience and build momentum ahead of its final season premiere on October 13, 2025.
