First streamed in August 2021, Only Murders in the Building has occupied a unique position in TV comedy. Based in the lavish but deceit-laden Arconia, the show deftly melds comedy, mystery, and heartwarming drama as it chronicles three accidental detectives who are united by their mutual fascination with true crime.

The fourth season ended with a bang as audiences were left reeling by the unexpected killing of veteran doorman Lester and teased still another mystery for the central trio to sleuth out. The show’s creators seem more than willing to meet that challenge head-on, suggesting that the world of the Arconia still has a lot more secrets to reveal.

What did John Hoffman tease about the future of Only Murders in the Building?

With its fifth Season now streaming, speculation is building about where the series might go next and whether the killings will ever really stop. Speaking to TV Insider for its Fall Preview of Season 5, co-creator and showrunner John Hoffman reflected on the show’s trajectory and addressed questions about its longevity, explaining:

“I can only tease that — I won’t say whether or not there will be a murder at the end of this season, but if there were, I think there’s an opportunity for more surprise that we will look to shake things up in a potential next go… Nothing is at its end.”

Maintaining the debate that the show needs to air with fresh ideas across the Seasons, he added:

‘Well, I don’t know how to make it fresh anymore,’ some new thought or some new idea in the room comes up or from one of our producers in the world or something I’ve been thinking on, and it feels like great opportunities to tell stories that feel relevant still. As long as that’s happening, the murder should happen in my mind and wherever they take us.”

The show may have started as a whimsical experiment, but it has since morphed into an award-winning sensation, including the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards distinction for the category of 'outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.'

Although Hoffman has intentionally left the future unclear, there are hints from others associated with the series. In an interview with The Wrap, Dan Fogelman said about Season 5 that:

“Another big fun mystery the writers have been cooking up.”

As per Deadline, the show's filming began in March 2025, even as Season 4 has not yet finished, a testament to the fact that the creative team has faith that there is life in Only Murders in the Building yet. The season would dig into Lester’s death and continue to explore the themes of past vs. present New York City.

What is Only Murders in the Building about?

At its core, Only Murders in the Building is a story about three weird neighbours who start as strangers and become a trio of sleuths. A mutual love of true-crime podcasts initially unites them, but it is their growing friendship that provides the show with emotional stakes.

Every season adds a new murder mystery layered over their personal odysseys, and the Arconia becomes a living, breathing character full of secrets. Only Murders in the Building Season 5, which debuted on Hulu on September 9, 2025, appears poised to maintain this blend of thrills and heart as the trio gets embroiled in another deadly investigation.
