Only Murders in the Building has returned with its Season 5 on September 9 on Hulu. The series again tracks the eccentric but ambitious detectives Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez).

The mystery of this season is more personal, as Lester (Teddy Coluca), the beloved doorman of the Arconia, has been killed under mysterious circumstances. His death rocks the whole building and pushes the three into a fresh investigation. What they discover is worse than what was anticipated: mob connections, underworld secrets, and even a backyard gambling house.

Season 5 is going back to the basics, as it combines all its classic elements of comedy, mystery, and romance.

The story does not end with the mystery. The most recent episodes also explore the shifting relationships among the three protagonists. Emerging love affairs make their friendship difficult, adding an element of tension to the investigation.

The showrunners have assured that the season will remain faithful to the trademark tone of the show. The audience can anticipate the same combination of stinging humor and emotional character development, albeit with higher stakes.

One of the biggest surprises in Only Murders in the Building Season 5 is a new romance for Charles. He encounters Sofia Cimel (Téa Leoni), a highly enigmatic woman who is on the hunt for her lost husband. She is directly involved in the murder investigation because of her husband’s connection to organized crime.

The relationship between Charles and Sofia is charming and creates tension as Charles comes out of his normal, cocooned personality. It is a refreshing change of character by Steve Martin for long-time fans.

When TV Insider asked to describe the new season in three words, Selena Gomez labelled it as:

“Charming, funny and exciting.”

Gomez adds:

“Mabel’s gotten a bit bold in her investigating. There’s a moment of panic – this feeling of doing something you’re not supposed to. She loves the danger and she’s willing to get the answers that she needs to get.”

The case itself is more complicated than ever. The murder of Lester causes the trio to enter a world of conspiracy made up of mob crews, mysterious billionaires, and the subterranean speakeasy in the Arconia. They even get to the legendary Corleone mansion in Staten Island, which binds the narrative to mafia folklore.

These revelations not only challenge their skills as detectives but also the faith they put in one another. The outcome is a mystery with comedic beats, sharp twists, and heartfelt moments concerning loyalty and friendship.

Up until now, Only Murders in the Building has released 3 episodes. The season has a total of 10 episodes, and new ones come out each week after the first drop.

The initial three episodes all concern the mysterious death of Lester. Episode 1, Nail in the Coffin, starts several days after Lester died. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel examine the crime scene and discover a cut-off finger in Oliver's apartment.

The hint brings them to mob networks and ultimately the Staten Island mansion of Nicky Caccimelio, the suspected mob boss of Lester. Their investigation uncovers the so-called “Velvet Room,” a secret speakeasy under the Arconia.

In Episode 2, After You, we learn more about the life of Lester. The flashbacks unveil his years of service to the Arconia and his complex relationship with Nicky. There are also sprinklings of flash-forwards to the evening of his death throughout the episode, providing hints as to what may have actually occurred.

The police claim that Lester died by accident, but the trio knows that there is something more sinister involved.

Episode 3, Rigor, brings the investigation to a higher level. The trio carries out an amateur autopsy on Nicky Caccimelio, where they find evidence of foul play: freezer burns, alien white dust, and rope marks. Worse still, they discover a portion of Lester's ledger in Nicky's mouth.

This leads them to the Velvet Room, where they are introduced to a powerful group known as the New Mob of New York. There is a dark web of billionaires who covertly run a big portion of the city's underworld.

The episode ends when the three are on the run, evading the new, deadly competitors, as they realize that the mystery is far from over.

Episode 4, Dirty Birds, will be released on September 16, 2025. The plot twist remains shrouded in mystery, but the episode should keep peeling back the conspiracy surrounding the death of Lester. The fans may anticipate more tension, character development, and disclosures about the secrets buried beneath the Arconia.

Only Murders in the Building season finale is set to air on October 28, 2025.
