Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building began with a case of the attempted assassination and subsequent murder of Sazz Pataki, Charles' long-time friend and stunt double. As Sazz was shot in Charles' apartment, the trio immediately guessed that the bullet must have come through the west wing of the Arconia building. The lead prompted them to begin a careful investigation of possible suspects among the latest and most secretive occupants of the facility.

The search by Oliver and Mabel led them to meet Vince Fish, an oddball with an eyepatch, and a close-knit Hispanic family obsessed with the card game, Oh Hell - all of whom had secrets and potential motives. In the meantime, the locked-up, unexplained Dudenoff apartment produced strange leads: A live pig in the tub and a ham radio, which added more weight to the identity speculation of the killer. However, this bizarre clue was linked to the cryptic last message of Sazz, who wrote “Tap In” with her own blood as she was dying.

Charles’s sorrows were compounded when he was approached by Jan (Amy Ryan), his ex-girlfriend and enemy, who had succeeded in getting out of prison and telling Charles that Sazz was after another murderer on the prowl in the building. When the investigation led to dead ends and false leads, the relations between the trio were put to the test.

The Season 4 finale of Only Murders in the Building picks up right from the Episode 9 climax, in which both Charles and Oliver learn via an interview with Ron Howard that screenwriter Marshall P. Pope (real name Rex Bailey) was a protégé of Sazz Pataki as a stuntman.

They hurry to send Mabel this vital discovery, oblivious that Mabel is already with Marshall, working on rewrites to the Only Murders in the Building movie script. As Mabel goes to get beers out of a box that Sazz brought to the Broadway premiere party, she discovers a previous version of the script that Sazz wrote herself.

The revelation is a major twist in Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building, as it turns out that Marshall was lying all along that he was the screenwriter. This discovery confirms the suspicions of Sazz earlier in the season and has a direct connection to her murder: She was murdered because she knew that Marshall had stolen her work and was going to turn him in.

Mabel is held in the apartment as a hostage, where Marshall sends a warning text to Charles and Oliver, threatening to kill Mabel should they call the police or attempt to intervene. Charles and Oliver, nevertheless, do not just sit there. They enlist the help of a few supporters, such as Vince Fish and Rudy, to create a distraction to enter the Dudenoff apartment, where Marshall is holding Mabel.

After learning about the stuntman capabilities of Marshall, Charles, and Oliver decide to climb the ledge outside of the building and break in through the window rather than the door. After their entrance, they face Marshall in a comical yet dramatic situation, in which they utilize Eva Longoria’s 19-in-1 beauty multitool as a weapon in a fight.

When it appears that Marshall is in control of things and the three are in serious trouble, there comes the dramatic twist to the tale - a bullet is fired through the window, killing Marshall. It is discovered that the shooter is an old ex-girlfriend of Charles, Jan, who has been living in Charles’s closet and using the secret passages of the Arconia building, waiting to have the chance to avenge the death of Sazz.

Her action rescues the three and halts the terror of Marshall. Before her arrest, Jan informs Charles that they are “endgame,” foreshadowing their future, complex, and murky relationships.

Following this dramatic climax, the season shifts to the wedding of Oliver and Loretta (Meryl Streep), which brings some relief and joy. Although a little drama is involved, as the show Loretta was to be featured on is relocated to New Zealand. The wedding proceeds without any problems, and the fans are satisfied with a touching, heart-warming ending for the couple.

The episode concludes with a cliffhanger: Shortly after the wedding, the corpse of the Arconia doorman Lester is found in the courtyard fountain, indicating a new enigma and even more mysteries awaiting Charles, Oliver, and Mabel during Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building.
