As HBO’s Lanterns is currently filming, we remain hopeful that the people involved behind the scenes of the series can bring forth a more respectful adaptation of the Green Lantern comics. The series will have eight episodes, and thus, filming is expected to continue for the coming months. Now, thanks to one of its actors, Jason Ritter, we know how many episodes of this eight-episode show have been filmed.

The actor sat down for an interview with Forbes on May 5, 2025. In that interview, Ritter touched on both his personal and professional life. One of the topics he discussed was Lanterns. He revealed that they are filming the show out of order and are currently filming episodes 3 and 4. Ritter also revealed that, as of now, four episodes have been shot.

What did Lanterns' Jason Ritter say?

As stated before, Jason Ritter, who is set to play the role of Billy Macon in the DCU series Lanterns, gave the exact number of filmed episodes to Forbes’ Senior Contributor Jeff Conway. Ritter’s exact words were:

“We are about to start shooting. We’ve shot four episodes so far and we’re about to start shooting episodes three and four. We’re doing it all a little out of order. The story is kind of jumping all around, but it’s been so fun and it’s a really well-written, really fun show. I’m just trying to fit into that world and maybe put a little silliness in there.”

Thus, now we know that half of the HBO series is complete, and filming might wrap in a few months. We may hear something about Lanterns in July, around the time of Comic-Con—a period when news about genre properties is all the rage.

What is HBO's Lanterns about?

We know that the HBO series will be led by not one, but two human Green Lantern Corps members: Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). In addition, we also know that Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner from the Superman movie. At a February 2025 press event, both James Gunn and Peter Safran hyped up this upcoming DCU superhero show. Gunn said:

"Then finally, y'know, we have Lanterns, which we just started shooting with HBO and Warner Brothers, and that is another really marvelous team of Tom King, Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy. And they have been doing marvelous work. I've been watching the dailies with that. It's really so cool because it is connected to Superman because we've got Guy Gardner in that, and then we've got these green lanterns over here. It's just such a different tone from what Superman is. And it's exactly what I want to bring to the DCU is being able to have these very different films and television series that are still part of an overall connected world, but have completely different feels to 'em."

Appreciating the talent involved in this HBO series, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran said:

"I will just say that we are incredibly fortunate to have Tom Chris and Damon Lindelof at the helm. Those guys are just masters. Aaron Pierre, magnificent, Kyle Chandler, amazing. We really are lucky. James Hawes is directing it."

These comments have fans hyped for Lanterns. Instead of being a space opera, the HBO series is being marketed as a True Detective-style procedural in which Hal and John investigate a murder in a small American town.

Are you excited for this HBO series? It is worth noting that Lanterns is expected to release somewhere in the first half of 2026.
