When it comes to a show that blends drama, comedy, and mystery, many would think about Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, as the show returned with its fifth installment. At the center of the story are three people who live inside the same building and are always fascinated by the true-crime podcasts.

Soon, this obsession turns into a spark as together, these three people get into amateur detective work. The main characters are played by Martine Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez.

While the original cast members returned, Season 5 also welcomed some new faces, and Keegan-Michael Key is one of them. During his interview with PEOPLE, the actor shed light on his experience of working on the hit TV series. The actor said:

"It's one of the warmest, one of the most collaborative, one of the friendliest sets I've ever been on in my career."

Key not only praised the working environment, but also mentioned that his co-stars are "wonderful people to work with". From witnessing the real friendships to observing how Gomez's character interacts with Martin Short, Keegan-Michael Key had a great time while shooting for Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building.

Comedian and actor Keegan-Michael Key has joined Only Murders in the Building Season 5 as Beau Tillman, the Mayor of New York City. Interestingly, Tillman appears to be someone who listens to the Only Murders in the Building podcast, which directly connects him with the story.

He’s involved in the big investigation, but in a funny way, he also shows his personality. For example, at Lester’s funeral, instead of just paying respects, he tries to sneak in some political promotion during his eulogy.

Key, who plays him, also said that this role was a lot of fun because it lets him play around and try new things. He gets to be creative and stretch his acting in playful ways, which makes the role both entertaining and a little challenging at the same time.

Apart from how much he enjoyed being on the sets of the latest chapter, Key also highlighted witnessing comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short immersing themselves in the characters. The actor revealed:

"Here's what I learned about Martin and Steve. Martin and Steve are basically not even playing characters. Charles and Oliver, their dynamic is pretty much Steve and Martin's dynamic in real life."

He also enjoyed watching Selena Gomez playing Mabel in the Hulu TV series. Key explained that even though Gomez is quite younger than her co-stars, she sometimes looks like the oldest person around. He said:

"One of my favorite things some days on set is to watch Selena [who plays Mabel Mora] just go ... It's so funny to watch them"

Key continued:

She's clearly younger than them by decades, and sometimes she's the oldest person in the room. It's quite delightful."

Overall, Key made a lot of memories while shooting for Season 5, and fans can look forward to seeing him in the later episodes. The TV series has a total of ten episodes, with the finale scheduled for October 28, 2025.
