Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Starz's fantasy historical series, wrapped its Season 1 with an intense and shocking finale, which ended on a major cliffhanger.

Episode 10 began with a veiled woman walking down the aisle in Castle Leoch for the MacKenzie-Grant wedding. While she is believed to be Ellen, seasoned Outlander fans know that Ellen did not marry Malcolm. She escaped with Brian on the day of her wedding and eventually became his wife, giving birth to Jamie Fraser.

Elsewhere in Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Julia is gearing up to be reunited with Henry at the marked tree the lovers had promised to meet in the last episode. After saying her final goodbye to Davina, she asks her to send Balloch after her and William to make it look like a kidnapping. Just before Julia is about to be reunited with Henry, we see a flashback of Julia and Henry bidding goodbye to a 2-year-old Claire at the train station. This was that fateful goodbye the couple bid to their daughter before their trip to Inverness.

In the 18th century, Henry and Julia finally reunite and make their way to the stones with baby William. Did Henry and Julia escape to their present time (to Claire) through the stones? Were Brian and Ellen able to escape together?

Here is the complete Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale ending explained.

How did Ellen and Brian escape in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale?

After Ellen learned that Colum broke his word and sent men to kill Brian, she announced that she was also free from her word and ready to escape with Brian. Mrs. Fitz and Jocasta (surprise) helped the lovers escape in a heartwarming portrayal of sisterly love and rebellion. Ellen disguised herself as a maid and was hidden with Brian in the back room of the castle. Elsewhere, Uncle Mac declared that Clan MacKenzie promised a marriage and if they forgo their condition, their clans will go to war in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale.

This brings us to the veiled woman walking down the aisle in the opening scene. As suspected, she was not Ellen but Malcolm's sister Maura, who was married off to Dougal to keep Clan MacKenzie's side of the bargain. As Dougal and Maura's wedding celebrations roared outside, Brian and Ellen slipped out of the castle, but not before they came across a drunk and brainwashed (by Uncle Mac) Malcolm. While Brian tried to warn Malcolm to get out of the way, he was adamant and even drew his sword. However, Brian ended up plunging his blade into Malcolm and he died in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale during that scuffle. Shocked, Ellen and Brian slipped away and reached Murtagh.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale: Were Julia and Henry able to travel through the stones?

While Julia's smart plan worked and Simon Fraser believed that she and 'his' son were abducted, Arch Bug was on Henry's tail. In the final moments of the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale, Henry and Julia finally reached the magical stones but were presented with the same dilemma Roger and Brianna faced in the parent series. Julia worried, what would happen if their son William is not a time traveler like them. While Henry assures that it could be genetic, it was just too high a risk.

As the couple was discussing their options, Henry saw Arch Bug and his men approaching them. It was time to make a decision in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale and Julia encouraged Henry to pass through the stones first. She assures him that she is protected as the wife of a laird, but Clan Grant men will kill him if he stays. While Julia wants Henry to return to safety, Henry takes her hand and is about to touch the stones when the screen cuts. The prequel series ends on this cliffhanger and we do not know if the couple (or either Julia or Henry) passed through the stones.

What were the fiery crosses at the end of the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale?

After escaping, Ellen and Brian stay hidden with Murtagh on the top of a hill. The lovers promise their undying love and duty to each other and are discussing their impending future when Brian sees a fiery cross lighting from the hill.

Fiery crosses were a signal to all clansmen to return to their laird and prepare for war. Failure to do so meant death. Brian ominously announces that he will have to report to his laird and partake in the upcoming Jacobite Uprising. As his wife, Ellen promises to stay by his side as a devoted wife. The Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale concludes with Ellen and Brian standing together, overlooking the fiery crosses. While Brian Fraser will never step down from his duty, he doesn't have a clan at the moment. So what will he do? Will Colum accept Ellen and her husband in their clan? That's something Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 will answer.
