Outlander: Blood of My Blood, the prequel series of Outlander, was released on Starz on August 8, 2025. Based on author Diana Gabaldon's characters, the spin-off show follows Jamie and Claire's parents' love stories in 18th-century Scotland and during World War I, respectively.
In the premiere, while Jamie's parents (Ellen and Brian) had their first meet-cute during Clan MacKenzie's Gathering, Claire's parents (Henry and Julia) fell in love during WWI and later married in 20th-century London.
While both these love stories kick-started in their respective times, they are related to each other through the most important element in the Outlander universe - time travel.
After Henry and Julia's motorcar crashed in the 20th century, they chanced upon the iconic stones. They were transported back to the 17th century, where Julia became a maidservant in Castle Leathers, Jamie's grandfather's house.
More on Outlander: Blood of My Blood in our story.
What is the time travel twist in Outlander: Blood of My Blood?
While one of the Outlander: Blood of My Blood trailers had already hinted that the prequel series would also feature the time travel twist, the premiere finally confirmed that Claire's parents were also time travelers like their daughter, who were accidentally transported to 18th-century Scotland.
In addition, the prequel's double-episode feature also retconned Claire's parents' lore, as she believed that her parents died in a car crash when she was very young. Since Outlander did not expand much about Claire's parents' deaths, it can be established that their family assumed the worst when they found their crashed motorcar in 1918.
The Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere finally confirmed that after Claire's parents survived falling into the river, they found themselves at the iconic magical stones of Craigh Na Dun from the parents' series. While Henry was plucking out a stone from his shoe, Julia touched the stones and was transported to 18th-century Scotland.
While her husband followed soon, she was eventually abducted and sold to Lord Lovat, Jamie's grandfather, and thus separated from Henry. Julia was forced to become a maidservant at Castle Leathers, where she crossed paths with Jamie's father, Brian.
On the other hand, while searching for his wife in the 18th century, Henry came across Malcolm Grant and eventually became a bladier for the Clan Grant, crossing paths with Jamie's mother's clan, Clan MacKenzie.
This cross-connection between Jamie and Claire's parents' love story is established in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere, and it would be interesting to see how their paths will cross again.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood: Could Jamie's parents reunite Claire's parents?
The time travel twist in Outlander: Blood of My Blood also established the core mystery of the show - will Claire's parents be reunited in the 18th century?
While Julia wishes to be reunited with her daughter and husband in the 20th century, this will not be possible. As established in Outlander, Henry and Julia will not be able to travel back to their time, but it remains to be seen what will become of them in the 18th century.
While Jamie's parents will eventually have a happy ending, the fate of Claire's parents' is still unknown. The Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere opened with tragedy for the couple, but they could still be reunited by Jamie's parents. With Julia captured against Brian's wishes, he might help her flee from his father's house in the upcoming episodes.
On the other hand, Colum's scheme to unite his clan with Clan Grant might cross Ellen and Henry's path, and she might help him look for his missing wife. With Brian and Ellen's budding romance, the couple could very well end up reuniting Henry and Julia in the 18th century, unaware that their children would eventually marry one day in the future.
