The Peacemaker Season 2 finale is exciting for the DCU fans as it sets up a major character and storyline for this new cinematic universe. While the seventh episode closed the book on the Earth X storyline, the season 2 finale, "Full Nelson," wraps up the storylines for all the characters, including Christopher Smith, Sasha Bordeaux, and Rick Flag Sr.
The season 2 finale ends with Flag Sr. marooning Chris at the seemingly quaint alien planet dubbed Salvation. Christopher tries to escape, but the QUC portal disappears, leaving him imprisoned there indefinitely. As he is all alone on the alien planet, Christopher hears some scary noises belonging to hellish creatures, bringing Peacemaker Season 2 to a close.
Will there be a Peacemaker Season 3? James Gunn answered recently:
James Gunn presided over a Q&A with the press before the season 2 finale. One of the reporters asked Gunn if there were any plans for a third season of the acclaimed DC HBO Max series. To this, the DC Studios Co-CEO responded:
“No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this [the ending of Season 2] will play out right now. So that doesn't mean that there won't be. I don't want to… never say never. But right now, no. This is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.”
After hearing this, the reporters quizzed James Gunn further about what his plans for Christopher Smith were. Here's what Gunn said about Chris's future in the overall DCU:
“Moving forward, yes. He’s important. He's really important to me. Peacemaker is an important character. And I said from the beginning when we took on this job, it's about really propping up and maintaining and repositioning the big diamond properties that DC has, the Batmans and Wonder Womans and Supermans, and then creating diamond properties out of the smaller characters like Peacemaker.”
Gunn further addressed the entrance of Checkmate and Salvation:
One of the highlights of this season is the introduction of two elements from DC Comics lore. One is the super spy organization "Checkmate," and the other is the alien planet Salvation. However, in the DCU, Checkmate seems to be a private security firm. But it may play an important role in the DCU in the future. Apart from that, the closing minutes of the season 2 finale might've set up a major antagonist for the DCU.
In the comics, Salvation is under the control of Darkseid's torturer, DeSaad. Thus, the creatures we heard in the closing minutes of the episode could've been parademons. But we have to wait and see how this storyline plays out in the DCU. James Gunn addressed Salvation and Checkmate in the Peacemaker Season 2 finale:
"Well, those are the two things that were always a part of this season. So when we sat down, even before I sat down with the writers room in DC, I had sort of mapped out what I thought the general story was, and two important aspects to that were Checkmate and especially Salvation, so those were things that I had pitched to everybody before we ever came into DC, and then after we came into DC and we met with the writers room and worked things out a little bit more. That was always pretty instrumental in the overall, overarching story that I’m telling in the DCU, but also connected to it as well."
Are you disappointed that, as of now, James Gunn has no plans for a third season? Let us know.
