Squid Game is back with its third season on Netflix, and this dystopian drama continues its legacy of tragic deaths that are not only impactful for the storyline but also for viewers.

Squid Game Season 3 picks up directly after the events of Season 2. It is revealed that the rebellion has been crushed, and the remaining players are now forced to participate in three more dangerous games—each naturally resulting in more grim deaths.

In every season of Squid Game, there have been deaths that proved to be particularly shocking. In Seasons 1 and 2, these included the deaths of Player 067, Kang Sae-byeok, and Player 390, Jung-bae, respectively. However, the shocking death of Player 149, Jang Geum-ja, in Season 3 stands out as the most tragic so far, given her complicated backstory and the reason she entered the game.

Player 149 commits suicide in Squid Game Season 3

In Squid Game Season 3 Episode 2, Player 149, Jang Geum-ja faces an impossible choice and does something making her unable to live with herself and ultimately leading to her suicide.

She was participating in these deadly games along with her son Park Yong-sik, Player 007, who is shown to be a gambler. The reason that the mother-son duo was in the game was because Yong-sik was in a lot of debt and needed money. To help her son, the mother also participated, which ultimately led to her tragic fate.

Jang Geum-ja’s motherly instincts were already established with her reason behind participating in the game and it also showed how much she loved her son. However, in episode 2, she is faced with an impossible dilemma and makes the only decision she believes she can.

Her son was ready to kill Player 222, Kim Jun-hee's baby as he thought that was an option for survival. However, Jang geum-ja could not let this happen and using her makeshift hairpin/blade, she stabbed her own son, killing him.

While she did what she had to at that moment, the trauma of killing her own child proved unbearable and it is then revealed that she has hung herself. Jang geum-ja’s suicide deeply impacts the players, especially Player 222, as it was her child whom Jang geum-ja had saved and killed her son in the process.

Deaths are everyday occurrences in the deadly world of Squid Game. However, Jang geum-ja’s stands out as particularly heartbreaking because it shows how it was her motherly instinct that made her a victim of her own choices. While she could not agree with her son killing an infant for survival, she also could not accept that she killed him, even if it was for the right reasons.

Squid Game is streaming on Netflix.
