Hwang Dong-hyuk's Squid Game Season 3 did not spare any player, and by the series finale, all the players were dead, even the protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Player 456).

While Dong-hyuk had earlier teased that the final chapter of his hit Korean thriller series would not have a happy ending, Gi-hun's death was truly tragic. He fulfilled his promise of putting an end to the games and sacrificed himself for Jun-hee's baby.

All other players also had tragic deaths. While Jun-hee (Player 222) jumped during Game 2, Jang Geum-ja (Player 149) committed suicide after earlier killing her own son during Game 1. While all these deaths were equally tragic, Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120)'s death was the most heartbreaking in Squid Game Season 3.

Even after finding the exit in Hide and Seek, she returned to rescue Geum-ja and Jun-hee, where she was brutally stabbed by Myung-gi (Player 333), who was on a selfish killing spree.

More on Hyun-ju's death in Squid Game Season 3 in our story.

Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120)'s death was the most heartbreaking in Squid Game Season 3

While Squid Game Season 3 killed almost all of the main cast till the finale, Player 120's death remains the most heartbreaking.

One of the players who survived the games in Season 2 and even actively helped Gi-hun during the players' revolt, Hyun-ju, died during the deadly hide-and-seek game.

Season 3 featured a dark version of this beloved children's game, where a team of seekers (Team Red) had to kill the team of hiders (Team Blue) in a maze in under 30 minutes.

Hyun-ju was in Team Blue and formed a loyal alliance with Geum-ja (Player 149) and Jun-hee (Player 222), who was also pregnant.

While players were fighting for their lives and turning against one another in Squid Game Season 3, Hyun-ju kept her promise and kept both the women safe, even when they were a liability for her.

While Geum-ja was naturally slow because of her age, Jun-hee was pregnant and thus in a critical condition during the game.

However, Hyun-ju did her best in keeping both the women safe and even fought (and killed) other players trying to kill them in Squid Game Season 3.

While it was inspiring to see Hyun-ju fight all the players who wanted to kill Geum-ja and Jun-hee, their group was getting extremely slow because of Jun-hee's swollen ankle.

After Geum-ja and Hyun-ju helped deliver her baby, the latter managed to find the exit and even had all the shape keys to unlock the door. While it looked like she would betray the two and exit, Hyun-ju came back for the two women, which ultimately led to her death.

Talking about this moment, Park Sung-hoon discussed with Variety:

''Her motivation shifted from Seasons 2 to 3. In Season 2, her main motivation was to get the money so that she could get her gender affirmation surgery, go to Thailand and start over. But in Season 3, her big motivation became protecting the weaker woman here, Geum-ja, and Jun-hee’s newborn baby as well.''

He added:

''So when she took a step outside, I think there was a wake up call inside her head telling her to go back: “You have to protect these people.” So I think the only thought that was left in her head at the moment was to go and save them.''

While every other player in Squid Game Season 3 died because they could not complete a game, Hyun-ju is one of the few who selflessly died, which makes her death even more heartbreaking.

In this game of deceit and lies, Hyun-ju chose to fight with dignity and protect the weak women who desperately needed her help. Even after she found the exit, she risked everything and came back for Geum-ja and Jun-hee, which eventually got her killed.

While Guem-ja and Jun-hee died to protect one of their own, Hyun-ju committed a real selfless act and died like a true hero.
