The latest episode of Apple TV's Pluribus excelled in adding more twists to the show's storyline, keeping the viewers on edge. After Carol's activities in the previous episode, the Others had abandoned her in Episode 5. While Carol slightly felt the pang of being left, she also made progress in her investigation of the Others.

Her detective skills led her to the empty milk cartons that she discovered were what the members of the hive mind or the Others consumed, leading her to the manufacturer of the product. With further investigation, she learned that the Others were not actually drinking milk but a mixture of water and a strange white powder. While investigating the white powder, Carol's reaction proved that she might have made a huge discovery in the case, which we will get to see in the next episode of Pluribus.

Her reaction of being shocked at finding something in the manufacturing plant has made the theory that the Vince Gilligan show might be hinting at a Soylent Green-style twist. Soylent Green is a 1973 sci-fi thriller film where the protagonist discovers that the highly processed food, Soylent Green, is actually made of human corpses. Fans of Pluribus have been theorizing this twist for a while, and the latest episode further made them suspect the same.

More on this in our story.

Does Pluribus Episode 5 hint at a Soylent Green-style twist? Speculations explored

In Episode 5 of Pluribus, Carol was finally left alone by the members of the hive mind after what she did to Zosia in the previous episode. In Episode 4, Carol had injected Zosia with sodium thiopental to find out about how to reverse the Joining bit fails as Zosia suffers from a cardiac arrest. Due to this, in the latest episode, Carol is left alone by the Others.

This gave her time to investigate the Others, which started with her discovering numerous milk cartons in the trash can. This led her to the manufacturing unit, Duke City Diary, where she learns that the people were not actually drinking milk. They were consuming a strange liquid made with water and a mysterious white powder, the mixture of which looked like "olive oil, but thinner and had a neutral pH," according to Carol.

Further investigation into the white powder takes Carol to a manufacturing plant called Agri-Jet. This is where the twist of the episode is introduced. As Carol begins to look into the various items in the manufacturing plant, she notices the mysterious things wrapped in plastic. Carol lifts the plastic wrap and covers her mouth in shock, resulting in a cliffhanger ending. This ending has made the theory of cannibalism in the series stronger.

For a while, fans have speculated that Pluribus might introduce a twist like Soylent Green, where the people were revealed to be consuming human corpses, and Carol's reaction at the end of the episode also hints at the same. The 1973 film, which was loosely inspired by Harry Harrison's sci-fi novel, revealed at the end that the processed food available to them was actually made up of human corpses.

While there has not been any confirmation about what Carol discovers at the end of Episode 5, the strongest theory points to "Soylent Green is People," the popular phrase from the film. In the Apple TV show's case, the milk might be made up of human corpses. More about the mysterious thing will be revealed in Episode 6 of Pluribus.
