He meets different people in London, such as a young butler or his housekeeper, who tell them that due to the minimum wage, they were living lives in poverty. Demelza, Sam, and Dwight also help the poor in Cornwall while waiting for some good news brought by Ross from London.

Later, Demelza tries to convince her younger brother, Drake, to get married to Rosina. While he argues about not loving her, Demelza still sticks to her decision, prompting them both to meet. After meeting Rosina, he makes up his mind to marry her and get over Morwenna, whose life again becomes hell as her husband, reverend Whitworth, sends their son into the care of the governess.
