While Titus Welliver ended his run as Harry Bosch in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy in March 2025, Prime Video expanded the universe with Ballard, a spin-off series starring Maggie Q as the titular detective and a successor to Welliver's Harry Bosch.

The crime drama series, based on Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels, began in 2014 and ended its seven-season run in 2021. However, much to fans' surprise, Welliver returned in Bosch: Legacy, but the show concluded after three seasons.

It looks like the network is not done with Michael Connelly's thriller universe, which expanded to even more heights with Ballard Season 1, which proved to be a worthy successor to Bosch and Legacy. The spin-off series, which received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike, recently achieved the perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, much like its predecessor, Bosch: Legacy.

While the spin-off series is not yet renewed for Season 2, its RT score and impressive streaming numbers suggest that Detective Renee will soon grace our screens with her LAPD's cold case unit in Season 2.

More on this in our story.

Ballard proved to be a worthy Bosch successor

Based on one of Connelly's characters, Ballard follows Renee as she begins to command the LAPD's newly formed cold case unit of the Robbery-Homicide Division. While the unit is primarily staffed with volunteers, Renee manages to train her misfit officers and reopen decades-old homicides while uncovering corruption and misogyny in the LAPD.Season 1 of the spin-off series tackled various cold cases and solved many mysteries of the department, with a nostalgic appearance by Welliver's Harry Bosch.

In addition to Ballard's perfect RT score of 100%, the series generated 2.5B minutes in the US from its release on July 9, 2025, till the end of the month. The Bosch spin-off series also made it to Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 for streaming originals, peaking at No. 4 with 619M minutes. Additionally, the Maggie Q-starring series also debuted on Prime Video's Top 10 charts at the No. 3 spot in more than 30 countries.

It also managed to dethrone Jensen Ackles' Countdown, another engrossing crime thriller series which recently concluded its debut season on the network. Both Ballard and Countdown contribute to the network's crime thriller-verse, along with Reacher and Bosch.

Currently, according to FlixPatrol, the Bosch spin-off series holds the No. 8 spot in the Top 10 TV shows and the No. 6 spot in the Top 10 overall on Prime Video.

This proves that Ballard essentially proved to be a worthy Bosch and Bosch: Legacy successor and continues to expand Michael Connelly's thriller universe. Fans are eager for the spin-off series' renewal news, and the impressive streaming numbers and the 100% RT score suggest that the show's future is bright.

In addition to Q, the Bosch spin-off also stars Courtney Taylor as Zamira Parker, Michael Mosley as Ted Rawls, Rebecca Field as Colleen Hatteras, Victoria Moroles as Martina Castro, and Amy Hill as Tutu. While Welliver appeared in a cameo in Season 1, it remains to be seen if he will reprise his Harry Bosch character if/when the show returns for Season 2.

Ballard is currently streaming on Prime Video.
