We Were Liars is currently one of the top shows to watch out for on Prime Video, and if we are to go by the Rotten Tomatoes score, its success is ongoing. The thriller series is based on the bestselling young adult book by E. Lockhart. The show presently has an RT critics score of 75%. It has overtaken another show based on a book, Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers, which has the RT score of 52%.
We Were Liars follows the mysterious story of Cadence Sinclair Eastman (played by Emily Alyn Lind) and her uber-wealthy family, who spend their summers on their private island. Cadence suffers a traumatic brain injury during one summer and cannot recall the events of when she turned 16. What follows is a string of shocking revelations about love, family, and irreversible mistakes.
Response from critics for We Were Liars debut season
Prime Video’s We Were Liars debuted a surprisingly solid RT score. Though the show only premiered recently, it has been gaining considerable momentum. Most critics of the show have admired the storytelling and setting and even compared it to other successful thriller shows with twist endings.
Critic Kshitij Rawat of Lifestyle Asia wrote,
“We Were Liars is one of those shows that sneaks up on you. You think you’re just watching pretty rich kids goofing around on an island but then suddenly you’re wondering how grief can look this real.”
One of the top critics, Lauren Thoman of The Wrap, shared that the show keeps the audience on the edge every episode, making it an interesting watch. Lauren wrote,
“Overall, “We Were Liars” is a solid entry into the hazy summer melodrama canon, sitting comfortably beside other twisty, sun-soaked series like “Big Little Lies” and “Cruel Summer.””
But the story also invited a few undesirable reviews, which focus on the show’s slow and dull narrative. A top critic, Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter, opined,
“In such a vast sea of stories about miserable rich white people, it’s hard to feel moved by the glacially paced awakening of one pampered princess coming to realize, at the big age of 16, that there might be more to life than partying.”
How did Nine Perfect Strangers fare with the critics?
Nine Perfect Strangers is based on the book by bestselling author Liane Moriarty. The second season of the show, which premiered on Hulu on May 21, 2025, is set against the backdrop of an Alpine resort. Nicole Kidman reprises her role as the resort director, Masha Dmitrichenko. While the first season received generally more favorable reviews, the second season so far has garnered mixed reviews. The final episode of the season, titled ‘Never Change,’ will air on July 2, 2025.
Abby Monteil of The Daily Beast wrote,
“What does a Nine Perfect Strangers follow-up that no one really asked for bring to the table? Outside of offering viewers a show full of hot, recognizable people on a beautiful getaway to half-watch while folding laundry, not much at all.”
However, Eric Deggans of NPR shared a more positive take on the show.
“Backed by an ensemble including Mark Strong, Christine Baranski and Murray Bartlett, it's an interesting ride that balances the dramatic and bizarre in compelling ways.”
