If you have just finished watching The Survivors on Netflix, you'd totally relate to those closing lines from Bronte, the girl who gets murdered in a very unfortunate turn of events. Evelyn Bay is a coastal town that has its own mysteries and a place that has been torn apart for a very long time.

The people of the town love each other, but their pasts connect them in a way that beholds darkness. Bronte Laidler, being a non-native, comes to Evelyn Bay for her art project and soon gets intertwined with the mysterious disappearance of a girl named Gabby Birch- a case from more than a decade back.

What was supposed to be a summer project soon turned out to be something personal for her, and as she almost got close to cracking Gaby's death, she was brutally murdered. Her final lines from her self-recorded tapes, as seen in The Survivors finale, read:

"And I have so many ideas that this project is literally just the start. Yeah, I'm just really excited for what's next."

Bronte Laidler's character arc in The Survivors is the most heartbreaking (and her absence is the major turning point in the plot)

Back in the day, Evelyn Bay was struck by tragedy when a dangerous storm swept the coast. In an attempt to save his brother Kieran Elliot (who was stuck in the caves), a local boy, Finn Elliot, displayed extremes of bravery alongside his friend Toby Gilroy. However, neither of them could make it to the shore, but surprisingly, Kieran came back in one piece.

Shattered by the disaster, the entire town started blaming Kieran for his stupidity (as he went to those uninhabitable caves during the storm) and also made it look like he was responsible for the death of Finn and Toby - even his own mother felt the same.

With no other option in hand and heartbroken by his brother's loss (as well as the constant blame game), Kieran leaves Evelyn Bay and goes to Australia on his father's advice. As we see in The Survivors, fifteen years down the line, Kieran suddenly makes his return to his hometown with his wife Mia (also a local girl who later moved to Sydney) and their newborn daughter.

The time of his arrival also surprisingly coincides with the murder of Bronte Laidler, a girl who came to visit Evelyn Bay over her summer break. Keiran gets a warm welcome from his childhood buddies Ash, Sean (Toby's younger brother), and his childhood friend (and love interest back in the day) Olivia, who also happens to be the sister of Gaby.

But other members, including Toby's father Julian, his son Liam (who has been grieving for a long time now), and Verity (Kieran's mother), do not let Kieran's return be very peaceful. With all these things going on, Bronte Laidler (who was on a full-fledged mission of uncovering the truth behind Gaby's disappearance) turns up dead one morning.

It becomes evident that she was in touch with a lot of town folk (including Gaby's mom, Trish, and a local named George Barlin) to learn about Gaby and how she was. She even got hold of all of Gaby's things, her pictures from back in the day, and clubbed them all together into a project - or rather a document that eventually turned out to be the major key in solving Bronte and Gaby's murders.

Bronte (even though she is a character that remained dead throughout the major part of The Survivors), was a turning point that not only helped solve mysteries about Toby and Finn's final moments but also cracked open a cold case of a girl's sudden disappearance. Her document holding Gaby's pictures, her own statements, and clips helped Mia to find a clue that probably escaped everyone's eyes. Thanks to Bronte, Keiran was also able to find out the cave where Gaby was drowned because of Sean's heartless actions (revealed in The Survivors finale).

Brontë helped the townspeople to know the unknown and also got justice for Gaby and her own death. So, her final words (in The Survivors finale) about how she loves the town but also wants to go back home to her parents are absolutely heartbreaking.

It is symbolic of the fact that she is the one The Survivors character that remained incomplete (in terms of her upcoming ventures) but also got the full circle. It is indeed the most prominent character arc in Netflix's latest crime drama adaptation.
