The Korean drama Mouse is not a regular crime show. It takes a very psychological approach and asks unsettling questions about human nature. The central theme of the series is about psychopathy. Scientists in the story claim to have discovered a specific gene that can almost perfectly predict if someone will develop psychopathic traits.

This discovery creates a huge ethical debate: if doctors can already see before birth that a baby carries this gene, should that child be allowed to live a normal life, or should society prevent their birth out of fear they might become a criminal in the future?

Against this setting, the plot focuses on two police officers. One is Jeong Ba-reum, a young officer new to the force and still figuring out his problem, and the other is Go Moo-chi, a hard-edged veteran detective with too much violence.

Their partnership is uncomplicated in Mouse. They have to catch a brutal serial killer. In the course of their investigation, both men become involved in a scary world of murderers and psychopaths, and they feel the effects personally in ways neither man expected.

One of the most shocking storylines in Mouse revolves around a notorious individual known as the Headhunter, an extremely violent serial killer whose acts took the lives of many.

For Detective Go Moo-chi, this is more than simply a case, as a lot of his motivation for being a cop is due to his personal history, as the Headhunter murdered his family. The brutality of the Headhunter left deep wounds on many families and deeply impacted Jeong Ba-reum.

At first glance, Ba-reum appears to be the perfect young officer who is polite, warm-hearted, and beloved by his local community. But the drama later reveals everything with a sudden twist: Ba-reum is actually the biological son of the Headhunter.

This revelation occurs due to a baby swap, which allowed him to grow up without even knowing who his real parents are. This way, Mouse uses this twist to bring emphasis to its biggest question: are people psychopaths because of their genes, or are they psychopaths because of their upbringing and environment?

Ba-reum's duality creates a tension point. He takes on the role of a law enforcement official, one who is sworn to protect people. However, over the course of the show, viewers start to realize Ba-reum is linked to the very crimes he has tried to solve.

This revelation is especially disturbing because it corrupts the viewers' ability to sympathize. They were initially rooting for Ba-reum, only to find out that he carried with him the darkest legacy of all.

The most significant plot twist in Mouse happens at the conclusion, when the truth about the "Seven Deadly Sins killer" is revealed. For much of the show, suspicion rests on medical resident Sung Yo-han, who is supposed to have a dark past and be the son of the Headhunter.

Even Detective Moo-chi rips his shirt off and tries to point him out as the killer. But turns out Yo-han is innocent. He is not the killer. He is just trying to stop the real killer. It's revealed that the Seven Deadly Sins killer is actually Jeong Ba-reum, the rookie office, whom the viewers have been aligned with from the very beginning.

Ba-reum's life takes a tragic turn after he receives a brain transplant. He gets Yo-han's brain, and he begins to show empathy, guilt, and regret for the murders he committed. Ba-reum ultimately confesses to his crimes and dies in prison. His last vision of his younger self in church shows both regret and acceptance.

The finale of Mouse also reveals the OZ organization that has been pulling the strings behind the scenes, as they manipulated Ba-reum and Yo-han to instill fear so that they could push forward the agenda of legalizing forced abortions for fetuses that carry the psychopath gene.
