Revival Season 1 Episode 8, titled A Rose and a Thorn delves deep into the Rose Blackdeer case. In the previous episodes, the case had been mentioned in passing, and now it finally takes center stage and with its probable significance to the revival day itself.

Episode 8 of Revival Season 1 is mostly a series of flashbacks, which transports the viewers to Rose Blackdeer’s disappearance before the revival day. Dana trusted Jesse Blackdeer and did not hold him responsible for the disappearance of his daughter, despite substantial proof against him. Dana instead starts looking for one ’Bear’, who could be the culprit.

Dana investigates Rose’s disappearance in Revival Season 1 Episode 8

Two years ago, Jesse would arrive at the police station to look into Rose, who had been missing. She was last seen sitting at a bus stop. Dana finds some romantic letters in Rose’s jewelry box, singed off by ‘Bear’. One letter, presumed to be the last, asks Rose to meet before she moves to Chicago. Dana suspects that the person was probably infatuated with Rose and did not like the idea of her moving away.

Later, she recognizes a bear claw necklace worn by Blaine Abel and ends up connecting it to Rose. She suspects him to be the ‘Bear’. On questioning, Blaine states that he was traveling when Rose disappeared. When Dana brings up the name ‘Bear’, Blaine is taken aback. Also, to note in this Revival Season 1 Episode 8 is that Blaine’s mannerism towards Dana reflects some murky history with the Cypresses.

Blaine would reiterate that, despite being much older than Rose, he did not have any wrong intentions. Instead, the letters were just friendly messages for someone he was fond of. Dana does not believe his claims. But she has no time to interrogate him further as she learns that Jesse Blackdeer has been arrested after they found Rose’s shirt in the furnace at the house.

Dana believes Jesse is innocent

Revival Season 1 also brings forth Dana’s skills as a detective, as she starts to realize that things are not what they seem. She had been at the house, and it is impossible that she had overlooked the evidence. Dana decides to take matters into her own hands as she lets Jesse escape, as she believes he was innocent. She was even willing to face the wrath of her department for it.

Meanwhile, Brent is fixated on his suspicions about Jesse. Jesse not only had a very public argument with Rose but also supervised Rose’s ownership contract, which stated that if Rose left the property, she would lose the land.

It comes as a surprise to Dana that Brent wanted to inspect Jesse Blackdeer’s house again. Brent was contacted by the kidnapper with the assurance that they would clear his mother’s bills. What did he have to do in return? Place evidence before the second search in Jesse Blackdeer’s house.

We also learn that May Tao, who had a romantic relationship with Rose, was desperate to solve the case. May was looking into Brent’s role in placing the false evidence. After Jesse was arrested, Brent managed to pay all the hospital bills for his mother. May informs Jesse about it, who follows him. Even though Brent shoots him, things take a new turn when he gets revived mysteriously.

A new lead against Blaine comes to light in Revival Season 1 Episode 8

It has been two years. Dana is discussing events around Rose’s disappearance. Em’s prescription pills were in the location where Rose’s earring was also found. Em states that she was killed near Moore Creek Lake. She would recall seeing Aaron with someone in an animal mask and an unknown symbol carved on his chest, before she was killed. Dana also brings up a message that Brent and Aaron shared about ‘a dark blue Cutlass Supreme’.

In Revival Season 1, it is already an established fact that Blaine’s family has had land disputes with many people. While Dana insists on finding evidence, Jesse does not have patience. He wanted to bring an end to Blaine, after all, Jesse is a 'reviver' and had nothing to lose. However, Dana asks him to stand down.

But Jesse is driven by rage and goes to confront Blaine. As he is about to kill Blaine with a knife, he hears a loud noise and follows it to find a strange creature referred to as ‘angel’. The creature, after being released, takes Jesse to the dark blue Cutlass Supreme. In the car, Jesse finds Rose’s remains wrapped in cloth. Jesse breaks down seeing them.

Meanwhile, Em gets in touch with Rhodey, who was in the reviver camp. He is planning to leave the town and asks Em to join him. But she refuses, as she wants to help Dana find the person responsible for her death. However, she does go to meet him and promises to reach out to him after the case is solved. In the interim, when Blaine wakes up, he is alarmed to learn that ‘angel’ is gone.

Revival Season 1 Episode 8, however, takes a surprising twist when a dart suddenly hits Em in her neck and she falls down. Rhodey’s betrayal could be heavy for Em, who ends up in the revival camp. Jesse also gets closure after holding Rose’s burial.
