Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 9, the penultimate episode of Adult Swim's adult animated sitcom, features yet another hilarious and inter-dimensional adventure for the titular duo.
The latest episode features the return of Morty Jr., Morty's estranged son from Season 1, who was conceived with a reproductive robot named Gwendolyn. It is revealed that Junior is on his deathbed. He is also the author of a best-selling book, where he has trash-talked about his father.
As Morty and Junior go on an adventure to find the latter's mother, Rick and Summer visit an interdimensional restaurant. Inspired by Minority Report-style precogs, the restaurant used technology to pre-determine a patron's orders on the basis of their mood and appetite, impressing Rick.
Here is the complete Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 9 recap.
Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 9 recap: Morty pays a visit to his estranged son
Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 9 opens with the Smith family at the breakfast table, where Morty gets a call from his son Morty Jr., who claims to be on his deathbed in a hospital. After much hesitation, Morty visits his son, who expresses his dying wish to meet with his mother for one last time.
While Morty wants to help his son, he remembers that Gwendoline was earlier disposed of by Rick into his garbage portal. The portal, known as Garbtopia, is a universal dumping ground for all of Rick's useless inventions, guarded by a tyrannical bot, Salvatron. While Salvatron's job is to segregate useful items from trash, it dumps everything as trash to avoid problems with Rick.
In Season 8 Episode 9, as Morty and Junior hide from Salvatron, a pizza bot takes them to a haven in Garbtopia, where some useful machinery is hiding away from Salvatron.
Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 9 recap: Morty and Junior pay their respects to Gwendolyn
The pizza bot takes Morty and Junior to the haven in Garbtopia, where they ask about Gwendolyn's whereabouts. Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 9 takes the father-son duo to Gwendolyn's resting place, where they pay their respects to the destroyed bot.
Just when they are about to leave, a giant robot attacks them, wanting to escape the garbage portal. Thinking their end is near, Morty reconciles with Junior, only to learn that he was not dying. Rather, Junior only wanted an adventure with his father to write a sequel to his best-selling book.
As Morty gets upset with Junior, he is shot by the robot. Salvatron finds all of them and after it shoots the robot, Morty hides in a waste space. Episode 9 reveals that Junior was saved by his fans at the Garbtopia and he motivates them to rise against their tyrannical bot.
As the Salvatron tower falls to the ground, the citizens of Garbtopia finally enjoy freedom and make Junior their leader. While Morty manages to escape the garbage portal in the end, Junior stays back, working on the sequel to his book.

Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 9 also features a hilarious subplot in the interdimensional restaurant, which uses precognition-determinism-oriented technology to pre-determine the customers' orders even before they order anything.
While Rick is impressed with the technology, Summer is unimpressed with a simple avocado toast. After the cog cooks cause an accident with Summer's truck, they find themselves at Rick's garbage portal. Abandoning their jobs, they set up their own food truck in the portal, where they enter into a loop of counterargument with Rick's Devil Advocate bot.
