Rick & Morty's world is expanding as The Warner Bros. network has greenlit Adult Swim's President Curtis spin-off series.

The flagship adult animated sitcom announced this news at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, where the President's voice actor, Keith David, also made a surprise appearance.

The character, co-created by Wes Archer and Tom Kauffman, debuted in Rick & Morty Season 2 and was modeled after the then-sitting Presidents of the United States, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. The President was later given the surname Curtis in season 5.

President Curtis is certainly one of the most exciting recurring characters in the sitcom, who shares a love-hate relationship with Rick Sanchez. He often calls upon the titular duo to bail America from various threats, only to end up getting them killed or arrested.

The spin-off sitcom is co-created by Dan Harmon and James Siciliano, with David reprising his voice character from the parent series. He will be joined by Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99, Twisted Metal) and Jim Rash (Community), who will round up the sitcom's voice cast.

The multiverse madness continues as Rick & Morty rolls out its next spin-off, President Curtis, following the footsteps of The Vindicators and Rick and Morty: The Anime.

A beloved and recurring character from the sitcom, the spin-off will follow the titular character and his eccentric staff as they tackle interdimensional diplomacy, paranormal investigations, and unexplained phenomena. The sitcom will certainly have a different tone from the flagship series, with more multiverse political madness.

While President Curtis had always been an interesting character, he was always overshadowed by his nemesis, Rick. However, David believes that fans will see a new side to the character in the spin-off:

“President Curtis has always been a blast to play. Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.”

In a statement with Deadline, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen expressed his thoughts on the character and shared his anticipation for President Curtis:

“This is a series we would have greenlit even if it didn’t have anything at all to do with Rick and Morty. President Andre Curtis is just that good of a character. The rest of the world the team has fleshed out is super fun and totally stands on its own. We can’t wait for you to see it.”

While Rick & Morty has many memorable and interesting recurring characters, Harmon and Siciliano decided on the Curtis spin-off because they believe that he is the only character:

''Who can go toe-to-toe with Rick and still hold office...''

With this new spin-off, fans will get to see new sci-fi missions and interdimensional trips, but with a political twist. It would also be interesting to see whether the titular duo will make any special appearances in the spin-off.

President Curtis will be executive produced by Harmon, Siciliano, Danielle Uhlarik, Steve Levy, and Monica Mitchell.

The Rick & Morty Season 8 finale, Hot Rick, will air on Adult Swim on July 27, 2025. Season 9 of the sitcom is currently in production.
