Rivers of Fate is a Brazilian Netflix drama that captivated audiences with its raw storyline against the backdrop of the Amazon. The show revolves around Janalice, a teenager who is drawn into the darkness of s*x trafficking, but intertwines themes of survival and cultural folklore. But as the credits of the last episode of Season 1 rolled by, it appeared quite obvious that the tale of Rivers of Fate is far from over!
The conclusion, although being dramatic in tone, left viewers with a series of questions that were left unanswered. The destiny of Janalice, the potential reappearance of Mariangel, the "pssica" mystifying staying power, and what will happen to other survivors are all left in limbo. Although Rivers of Fate hasn't been formally renewed for Season 2, the pathway of dangling strings from Season 1 completely indicates that there is more to tell.
Without an end, Season 1 is only half-done, and that's a problem: what would Rivers of Fate Season 2 be if it were to exist?
Here are 5 unresolved questions from Season 1 that Rivers of Fate Season 2 needs to address
1. What happens to Janalice if she doesn't go home?
Janalice takes the dramatic step of not going back home to her family or village at the close of Rivers of Fate Season 1. She decides to stay with Mariangel and leave everything behind, in effect abandoning her life before. The decision leaves her journey incomplete.
How does one rebuild one's life after one has fled such trauma? What are the emotional injuries that she must confront? A second season of Rivers of Fate would be able to delve deeper into the repercussions of her experience, both how she feels, how she copes, and how she develops further an independent identity. Otherwise, Janalice's story is left on a loop, and it becomes one of the largest loose ends.
2. How do new characters set up the next chapter of the story?
All the lead actors of Season 1 of Rivers of Fate, Amadeu, Zé Do Boi, Preá, and Pedro, perished in the gory finale. That gives a fresh start for Season 2 to bring in new faces. New enemies or allies may enter Janalice's life if Rivers of Fate is ever reactivated, changing her fate in directions she would never have imagined.
Will stability and support come in the form of new faces, or will new faces bring more dark enemies with the same trafficking rings she managed to escape from? This open question provides the series plenty of room to expand its universe without betraying what has been established.
3. What is the future role of Mariangel in Janalice's life?
Mariangel is one of the strongest characters in Rivers of Fate. Her search for vengeance against her perpetrators went in parallel with Janalice's struggle to stay alive, and she catalyzed and became the friend of the girl. She becomes the custodian of Janalice by the end of Season 1, as the younger girl prefers to stay with her rather than return home.
This introduces a whole new dynamic. Who will Mariangel be: a mother figure, a mentor, or merely another survivor struggling to deal with her own problems? A second season of Rivers of Fate might delve further into the dynamic of their relationship, something which was only given a cursory glance in Season 1.
4. What happens to Luzia and the other survivors?
Janalice's friend Luzia and brother Miltinho escape in the last episode of Rivers of Fate. Although this is a positive outcome, it is not the ultimate conclusion. In what ways is Luzia successfully reinserted into her culture, and how does being held captive impact her emotionally? Except for Luzia, the ultimate destiny of the several dozen trafficked girls is left to the viewer.
If Rivers of Fate Season 2 ever did materialize, it would bring these viewpoints to light, carrying on the story further beyond Janalice and Mariangel to highlight the ripple effect that trafficking has on other survivors. Otherwise, their stories go untold and are a little behind.
5. Is the psychological mystery still relevant?
Through the entirety of Rivers of Fate Season 1, the specter of pssica, a curse or supernatural creature, looms over the characters. While it certainly does contribute some cultural richness and symbolism, pssica is never overtly stated to be completely aware of what it represents. Is pssica simply superstition, or is it the psychological burden of trauma that the characters are then dealing with?
Perhaps it could hint at something otherworldly that comes into fruition during Season 2? Up to now, pssica is the least clear aspect of Rivers of Fate, raising more questions than answers.
Hence, Season 1 of Rivers of Fate presented an interesting story but was unable to leave audiences with full closure. From Janalice's uncertain future and Mariangel's new role to introducing into view potential new actors and Luzia's open-ended storyline and mystery of pssica, there are too many loose ends to disregard.
While no word has officially been released regarding a renewal, these open-ended questions are evidence that there is more tale to be told in Rivers of Fate. Fans remain guessing for now, but the cliffhanger ending keeps folks talking and perpetuates the long-lasting effect of Season 1 far beyond its conclusion.
