The announcement of a Buffy Reboot in the works in early 2025 left fans excited and anticipating the return of the beloved late 1990s and early 2000s show to the screens.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is reprising her iconic slayer character, and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is directing the Pilot episode of the reboot.

In a recent interview with IGN, Gellar shared that the reboot directed by Zhao will respect the legacy of the original show, maintaining the "DNA of the original." Gellar will reprise her role as a mentor to a new slayer in town, played by actress Ryan Keira Armstrong.

More on this in our story.

Sarah Michelle Gellar comments on Buffy Reboot, says reboot will respect the legacy of the original show

The pilot for the Buffy Reboot was ordered and produced by Hulu. The original series, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer, followed Gellar’s Buffy Summers as she fought with terrifying otherworldly creatures throughout the seven seasons. The show has maintained a dedicated fanbase, making it one of the cult classic shows of the 2000s.

Expanding a classic show with a huge fanbase can be a daunting task. However, Gellar’s comments on the reboot respecting the original show have made fans hopeful about it. In a recent IGN interview, Gellar discussed how the show continues to resonate even today.

She also shared that the reboot is meaningful not just because it will bring the beloved Buffyverse but also because it will honor the original show's legacy. She said:

"Fandoms like Buffy still resonate today - because it’s not just about the show, but about the community that’s grown around it."

She further added:

"For me, the heart of Buffy was always about found family - that sense of belonging - and being loved for who you are, and that’s more important now than ever. That’s what makes this new chapter so meaningful, it’s not just revisiting the past but honoring the show’s original DNA."

She further shared how special it is to her knowing that fans and viewers still carry so much love for the show, which was last on screen more than two decades ago.

Another surprise for the fandom was that Zhao is a superfan of the original series. This could be a bonus for the Buffy reboot, as it will help the reboot capture the essence of the original series. Zhao has also previously shared that she has finished directing the Pilot; however, details about the premiere of the Pilot or whether the show will be picked as a series have not been confirmed yet.

Aside from Gellar and Armstrong, the Buffy reboot will bring a stellar ensemble cast together that includes Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Faly Rakotohavana, Jack Cutmore-Scott, and Daniel Di Tomasso.
