Schmigadoon! is returning for fans two years after its conclusion on Apple TV+ (but there’s a catch)

Schmigadoon! is counted among the most underrated shows on Apple TV+. The musical comedy premiered in 2021 and was set in a magical world of stage musicals, where a New York-based couple navigated the challenges in their relationship.

The show had an out-of-the-box theme and perfectly blended the genres of music, fantasy, drama, and romance. It also paid homage to the musicals of the Golden era, which made it a hit among the audience.

However, the series aired its second season in 2023 and was canceled after that. Schmigadoon! is now coming back for fans, albeit in a new avatar. The series is being turned into a Broadway production, which will debut next year.

Schmigadoon! musical to debut on Broadway in 2026

The Schmigadoon! musical has already been performed at the Eisenhower Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., earlier this year. Recently, the producers announced that the production will be headed to Broadway in the Spring of 2026.

The musical is based on the first season of the Apple TV+ series and is being produced by Lorne Michaels, one of the executive producers on the television drama. Michaels released a statement announcing the Broadway adaptation of the show and said:

“Schmigadoon is a love letter to the Golden Age of movie musicals. It’s a little bit nostalgic and a lot of fun. We’re very excited to bring it to Broadway.”

The production will have an opening night on April 20, 2026, after holding previews at the Nederlander Theatre on April 4, 2026. The run will conclude on September 6 of the same year. Tickets for the play will go live on October 15, 2025, at 10 AM ET. The official synopsis of Schmigadoon! musical reads:

“New York doctors Josh and Melissa set out on a couples’ backpacking retreat to rekindle the flame, but instead find themselves in Schmigadoon, a magical town that’s a Golden Age musical come to life. The townspeople won’t stop singing, the bridge out leads nowhere, and the only way to escape is by finding true love—which may or may not be with each other.”

Created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, Schmigadoon! debuted on Apple TV+ in July 2021 and earned rave reviews from the critics and viewers. The first season was set in the magical town of Schmigadoon, where Josh Skinner and Melissa Gimble found themselves trapped in a Golden Age–style musical and mended the issues in their relationship.

In the second season, which premiered in May 2023, the couple arrived in Schmicago, where they saw musicals dedicated to the 1960s and 1970s and contemplated their future together. The show starred Keegan-Michael Key as Josh Skinner and Cecily Strong as Melissa Gimble.
