House of the Dragon fans were in for a surprise when Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen unexpectedly kissed Mysaria in one of the episodes of the second season. Though the two women displayed intense chemistry, the kiss did not go down well with a section of the audience, as Rhaenyra was already married to Prince Daemon.
Emma D'Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, has now opened up about the relationship between their character and Mysaria. In an interview with Gold Derby, the actor said that Rhaenyra could not survive alone and always needed a partner. That is why she confided in Mysaria in the absence of Daemon in House of the Dragon Season 2:
“In the absence of Daemon and Alicent, she: [Rhaenyra] seeks a new bond. She fundamentally can't survive as a sole agent. She has to pair, and pair really hard.”

During the interview, Emma D'Arcy praised Mysaria actress Sonoya Mizuno’s performance. They also highlighted the importance of Rhaenyra’s unique relationship with a woman in a male-dominated society like Westeros:
“Sonoya Mizuno is totally incredible, and there's something quite unusual about their relationship. The friendship and companionship of another woman is unusual.”
“All of Rhaenyra's tools are designed to enable her to navigate and manipulate a male-dominated world. Those carefully honed skills all suddenly feel like dumb instruments in the face of another woman.”
In House of the Dragon Season 1, Mysaria ran a brothel in King’s Landing and used her sources to know the secrets of the royal family. In the second season, she sided with the Blacks and decided to help Rhaenyra in her war against the Greens.
As Daemon was away building an army at Harrenhal for the war, Rhaenyra grew closer to Mysaria, and the two ended up kissing. The scene left the audience divided, as some people praised Rhaenyra for embracing her bisexuality, the seeds for which were sown in the first season.
On the other hand, some fans attributed the moment to Rhaenyra cheating on Daemon while he was gathering an army in her name. Based on the book Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin, House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones, which tells the story of a civil war between two sides of the Targaryen family, also called the Dance of the Dragons.
The family is divided between the Greens and the Blacks, led by King Aegon II Targaryen and Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively. The struggle for the throne between the half-siblings begins with the death of their father, King Viserys.
A third season of the hit series has already been ordered by HBO and is expected to premiere in 2026. Apart from Emma D'Arcy and Sonoya Mizuno, House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II Targaryen.
House of the Dragon Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Max.
