NCIS: Origins Season 2 premiered recently and wasted no time in revealing the fate of Lala. For months, fans had been worried about the Special Agent’s life after she was involved in a car crash in the first season’s finale.

Audiences are happy to know that Lala has survived the crash and continues to be a part of the show. However, fans who shipped her with Gibbs are a little disappointed as the latter has moved on with Diane Sterling.

Mariel Molino, who plays Lala in NCIS: Origins, has now talked about her character’s feelings for Gibbs. In an interview with TV Insider, the actor stated that despite Gibbs being in a relationship with someone else, Lala continues to love him:

“Yeah, I mean, I think she still feels the same way. She still loves Gibbs, but she also has to respect the fact that he’s moved on and he has a girlfriend, and Lala is just as proud as Gibbs, and so she’s not going to let that show.”

In NCIS: Origins Season 2 Episode 1, Lala returns to service and has complicated dynamics with Gibbs. The two almost kissed in the first season’s finale, but did not act upon their feelings, and soon Lala met with a crash. As she recovered in the hospital, Gibbs did not even visit her and instead started a relationship with Diane.

However, he still feels protective of Lala at the office, as he feels she should take some more time to rest instead of rejoining the service. Talking about the changing dynamics between the two, Mariel Molino said in her interview:

“I think we see that there is a bit of protecting of Lala and perhaps doubting if she’s ready to be back. And that’s the one thing that upsets her because I think she’s always had to prove that she is worthy of the job and that she’s an incredible agent.”

Further talking about how Lala feels bad about Gibbs not checking up on her after the accident, Molino stated:

“I think there is some resentment on Lala’s part to feeling like Gibbs is the only one that didn’t really come to visit her and didn’t check in on her after the crash. And so as far as she’s concerned, it feels like he doesn’t care or he’s choosing to move on and there’s just so much that hasn’t been said.”

Since NCIS: Origins is a prequel to NCIS, it has already been established in the franchise’s lore that Gibbs and Lala do not end up together. In fact, Lala is never mentioned in the original series, which hints that she will eventually leave Gibbs’ life.

Apart from Molino, NCIS: Origins stars Austin Stowell as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Tyla Abercrumbie as Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Hayes, Kyle Schmid as Special Agent Mike Franks, Caleb Foote as Special Agent Bernard "Randy" Randolf, Diany Rodriguez as Special Agent Vera Strickland, and Kathleen Kenny as Diane Sterling.

NCIS: Origins Season 2 airs on CBS on Tuesday.
