Netflix's dark comedy mini-series Sirens is all the hype on the internet right now, partly due to the debate it opened after its shocking ending.

The series follows Devon and her quest to save her sister Simone from her mysterious new boss, Michaela, who lives in a house on a remote island.

While Sirens feels like a story about sisterhood, an elder sister trying to free her younger sister from a predatory boss, it is much more than that. The show masquerades Devon's insecurities and her efforts to save her sister, yes, but also save herself in the process.

We learned about the sister's traumatic childhood, where after their mother died at an early age, their father resorted to alcoholism and was eventually diagnosed with Dementia. While Devon tries her best to take care of her ailing father, Simone remembers the neglect she felt because of him and decides to move out and begin a new life.

Devon's efforts to find Simone then become her quest to bring her sister back into their shared space of trauma so that they could suffer together.

Exploring Devon's motives towards her sister Simone in Sirens. Was she really trying to save her?

Sirens starts as a series about Devon, a concerned elder sister, trying to find her baby sister Simone. After spending a night in jail, we see Devon at her lowest when the show starts.

She is also dealing with alcoholism like her father, Bruce and s*x addiction. The added mystery about her sister just adds to her despair. However, the series establishes her as an ideal elder sister who is trying to look out for her younger sister.

However, as Sirens progresses, Devon's inherent selfishness starts to become apparent. She enters Simone and Michaela's idealistic pastel world on the island in dark black clothing, which immediately establishes her as an outsider.

While Simone has perfectly aligned herself with this new world, leaving their childhood toxicity behind, Devon could not. And her looking out for Simone was a cry for help. Devon wanted her sister to share their traumatic life, which is why she was hell-bent on proving that Michaela runs a cult and is a sinister woman.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sirens creator Molly Smith Metzler discussed the idea of Devon trying to live in the past and how it is open for the audience to choose who is right:

''Every sister relationship I know is very complex. I think they’re both right. I love offering that question to the audience because I think how you interpret it says a lot about you and your relationships with your family.''

She added:

''The truth is on the table. No one loves you like your sister, no one will call you out and also no one will show up for you in that same way. Their dynamic is that push and pull that they’re both right about everything all the time.''

Sirens finale blurs the lines between good and bad

While Devon is posited as the sane sister in Sirens, she masks her insecurities behind the garb of looking out for her sister. Struck with the eldest child syndrome, she is unable to move out of her past and traumatic life, which has made her life miserable beyond repair.

On the other hand, while the series ends with the shocking reveal that Simone was having an affair with Peter and she took over Michaela's place as the new Mrs. Kell, her choices make sense, considering the kind of life she has had throughout.

Talking about Simone's choices, Metzler further discussed:

''I can’t ask you to feel a certain way about what Simone does. All I can ask you is to try to understand it, because if you were in her shoes, and that ferry is leaving to take you back to certain trauma and destitute, what would you do? That’s what I hope people are talking about. I hope this is a debate people are having.''

Sirens ends with Simone finding a way around her new life and Devon taking the ferry, which will take her back to her old life.
