Netflix's latest American limited dark comedy series Sirens saw a shocking reveal in the finale, where Devon finally learned the truth about her sister, Simone, and her suspicious relationship with her boss, Michaela.

Throughout the show, Devon was suspicious that her sister's new boss, Michaela, had something to do with her disappearance, and secretly ran a cult.

While the Sirens finale took an altogether different approach, revealing that Simone was actually having an affair with Michaela's husband Peter, the show was full of red herrings, which posited Michaela as the culprit.

One of these was the interaction Devon and Simone's father, Bruce, has with the mysterious philanthropist.

Since Bruce was diagnosed with early-onset dementia and there was no mention of his past with Michaela, he was likely mistaken when he recognised her. His mistaken familiarity with Michaela suggests the severity of his illness.

More on this in our story.

Bruce's interaction with Michaela highlights the severity of his dementia in Sirens

While Devon was adamant on finding her sister Simone's whereabouts, a part of her also held her responsible for cutting off all ties with their family and leaving their sick father all to Devon.

However, Simone was in for a shocking reunion with her father in Sirens when Ethan dropped in unexpectedly to propose to her. Simone is naturally taken aback by the dual surprise: her father's sudden arrival and Ethan's proposal.

Ethan's proposal is interrupted when Michaela enters the room and Bruce behaves as if he has known her all his life. The secret about their history intensifies when he says this to her:

"Oh my god, it's really you. I knew it was you. I felt you coming in. You remember me?"

While there was no chance that Bruce and Micheala had ever crossed paths, he began speaking to her as if they shared a deep history. He complimented her on her beauty and even confused her with his late wife, Devon and Simone's mother.

However, later, he also confuses Michaela with another woman in his life, with whom he shared a past. This confusion suggests that Bruce did not know Michaela and his interaction was another sign of the severity of his dementia.

While Sirens hold Simone responsible for leaving her sick father, this scene clearly suggests that Bruce's illness was getting out of hand.

Bruce and Michaela's interaction added to the supernatural quality of Sirens

While the confused interaction between Bruce and Michaela clearly highlighted the former's deteriorating health, it also had other connotations.

Sirens was rife with allusions to Greek mythology, one of them being that the men around Micheala, Devon and Simone were enchanted by their beauty and were naturally drawn towards them (like beautiful Greek goddesses).

Thus, Bruce's interaction then adds to Michaela's over-arching charm in the show, which had everybody under her spell on the island. In addition, it also helped in creating more secrecy around Michaela's character, which made the finale reveal even more shocking.
