Slow Horses Season 5 has upped the stakes with a terrorist plot revolving around the mayoral campaign in London.
Episode 5, titled ‘Circus,’ brings forth the aftermath of the accidental death of Dennis Gimball, the mayoral candidate.
Meanwhile, Tara is arrested for her alleged role in the attack. The interrogation, however, leads to a shocking revelation about her actual role in it.
Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5 finds the terrorists on the edge
The aftermath of Gimball’s death has everyone highly strung. While the Libyan terrorists are still on their mission, there is palpable tension within their group as they arrive near the airport.
Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5 finds Sami confronting their leader, Farouk, who was unable to assassinate London mayor Zafar Jaffrey.
When Sami threatens to withdraw, Farouk has had enough and points his gun at him. It is understood that the only way the former can leave the group is through death. But as they continue arguing, they learn about Gimball’s death. This piece of information gives them the much-needed boost, and they decide to go ahead with their destabilization plan. When Farouk was threatening Sami near the airport, he had fired his gun, which caught the attention of MI5.
Cartwright and Coe's failed attempt to cover up their tracks in Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5
River Cartwright and JK Coe are anxious about having played the unexpected role in Gimball’s accident in Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5. They have to now figure out a way to conceal traces and lie low. River’s clothes had paint that had fallen on the deceased politician. Coe helps him get new clothes and get rid of the old ones. As they sit in the car, Jackson Lamb reaches out to Cartwright to meet for a debrief. The two agents are extremely antsy to face the consequences of their actions from MI5. The only option left for them was to keep their involvement in the accident hush-hush.
When Cartwright meets Lamb, he apologizes for reaching the place much after Gimball had passed away. Lamb is suspicious of him and wonders if he is hiding something significant. When Lamb presses him, Cartwright ends up revealing the truth about the accident. The information greatly aggravates Lamb. However, Lamb decides not to report Cartwright and Coe, as he is certain that their misstep will be the end of Slough House.
Tara gets interrogated in Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5
Tara is meanwhile in MI5 custody, being interrogated by Emma Flyte. After giving some ambiguous responses, she reveals that the masked Libyan terrorists had threatened her to get involved with Roddy Ho, as he handled tech for MI5. She was targeted by the terrorists as she was a Libyan herself. A quick background check also reveals the same. Though she has been in the UK for a year, she was not involved in anything shady. The terrorists wanted her to access the MI5 database through Roddy and get the code. Tara gives the code to Flyte as well.
Things take a new turn in Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5 when Lamb arrives at Regent Park. He informs Diana Taverner about the terrorist plot involving the destabilization strategy that the UK once used. Claude Whelan, however, has doubts and is reluctant to believe Lamb. Diana tests it out by bringing up the various pointers of the plan to Tara. She recognizes them. As a matter of fact, it was she who came up with the idea to use the UK’s own strategy against them.
In Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5, it comes to light that Tara believes the UK’s political involvement in the coup vastly affected millions of Libyans. It was during a Libyan cultural get-together that Tara met the men. She shared her destabilization plan without any expectations of it taking shape. It is only later that she realized that the men were terrorists and were planning to carry out an attack. Tara tried to distance herself, but they forced her to get acquainted with Roddy.
Tara manages to deceive MI5 with her meticulous plan in Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5
Whelan wants to draw the terrorists through Tara in Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5. She was supposed to meet the men that night. Whelan figured this was the best way to get close to the terrorists and puts together a scheme without Diana’s complete knowledge.
With a location tracker and a wire, Tara goes to meet them as planned. When Diana learns about this, she is livid, considering every way the plan could fail. Lamb is also trying to find information on former Libyan security chiefs, who may be involved in the terrorist attack.
As Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 5 curtains come to a close, the audience learn that Tara had a bigger role in the attack. Her theatrics as a victim in the whole plot were nothing but a means to keep the plan rolling. Whelan, who falls for her antics, ends up freeing her.
It appears that Tara planned on getting caught and shared the code with them. She wanted the hackers to put the code in the MI5 database. The code is meant to shut down all systems, ‘blinding’ them literally. This move will completely shut the MI5 authorities from the world, setting up the arena for their planned attack.
